The Memphis Grizzlies are healthy after last season's never-ending injury crisis saw them use the most players in a single season (33) of any team in NBA history, and this time around, they're back to their best.
Under head coach Taylor Jenkins, the Grizzlies are second in the Western Conference with a 35-17 record, only behind the runaway leader Oklahoma City Thunder. Memphis fell to OKC last time out, but there is no shame in losing to a team of that caliber.
The Grizzlies had been in fine form before that defeat, suggesting they should have far too much for the 26-26 Phoenix Suns, who are in real danger of failing to make the play-in, when the teams square off on Tuesday night.
With the Grizzlies 11 wins better off than their hosts, they can be expected to secure victory at the Footprint Center on Monday, and they should do so convincingly.
Memphis beat Phoenix by five points on New Year’s Eve and the line being set at the same margin of victory seems generous given Mike Budenholzer’s Suns have only regressed since that defeat.
Phoenix’s big three hasn’t worked out.
Devin Booker’s points per game (26.4) is the lowest it has been since the 2020/21 season, Kevin Durant was involved in plenty of potential trade packages at the deadline and Bradley Beal is struggling to even get on the court, falling completely out of favor in recent weeks.
The behind-the-scenes turmoil is spilling onto the court where the Suns have managed just one win in five games. A visit from the Grizzlies, who have tasted victory in six of the last 10 head-to-heads, is unlikely to see them stop the rot.
Memphis has lost just two of its last 12 games, has covered in five of its last six matches in Arizona and is 7-3 against the spread in the last 10 outings.
Jenkins’ side is far more settled than Budenholzer’s and they should have no issues in securing a convincing victory at the Footprint Center.
One of the many issues currently plaguing the Suns is their inability to deal with big men, suggesting Jaren Jackson Jr. - who is set to feature in the All-Star Game this weekend - could enjoy himself in Arizona.
Phoenix’s last three games have seen their opponents average 62.7 rebounds per game, with none of Durant, Nick Richards, Mason Plumlee or Bol Bol being consistent when it comes to rebounding.
Jackson Jr., on the other hand, is a strong glass cleaner, grabbing 5.2 per game in his last 10 matches and his ability to dominate the paint could also see him put up a hefty points tally as well.
Given he has averaged 26.4 points per game in his last 10 games, it seems extremely likely he will go Over 27.5 points and rebounds, especially when considering how dominant he was in the Grizzlies’ December meeting with the Suns.
Jackson Jr. put up 38 points and 12 rebounds in that victory, meaning he has cleared a 27.5 points-and-rebounds line in his last three meetings with the Suns, and he should dominate Phoenix again on Monday.
With that weakness against big men being so noticeable for the Suns and so detrimental to their play, it could pay to double down on the Grizzlies’ frontcourt stars to shine in Arizona with Zach Edey also set to enjoy a big night at the Footprint Center.
The rookie played just 13 minutes against the Thunder as he has been struggling with a nose injury - he has worn a face mask since mid-January - of late but he has been cleared to play against the Suns and could get back to his best.
Edey put up a double-double in each of his previous three games before that defeat against OKC, suggesting a line of just 14.5 for combined points and rebounds is a touch low for the rising star.
The 7-foot-4 Canadian, who sits third in the NBA's Rookie Ladder, has averaged 10.3 points and 8.6 rebounds across his last 10 appearances and should be able to exploit the Suns’ key weakness on Monday.
