The Oklahoma City Thunder’s 11-game winning run was brought to an end by the Houston Rockets - the team sandwiched between OKC and their next opponents, the Los Angeles Lakers, at the summit of the Western Conference standings - on Friday and they will be keen to bounce back with the playoffs on the horizon.
Mark Daigneault’s side sealed top spot in the West weeks ago but the coach has still been as demanding as ever as he looks to lead his young roster to a championship.
However, there is no guarantee that they will immediately bounce back, as a visit from the West’s third-placed team, the Los Angeles Lakers, is likely to be anything but straightforward, with JJ Reddick’s side fancied to give a bold showing at the Paycom Center on Sunday afternoon.
With the Thunder effectively playing for nothing and coming off the back of a loss, a -9.0 spread for Sunday’s hosts looks a tad steep, especially as the Lakers have plenty to play for.
The five teams below the Lakers could all usurp them in the remaining stages of the season, with the Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors breathing down their neck in particular, and a win over OKC could prove vital.
Reddick’s team can take confidence from their strong head-to-head record against the Thunder, with LA winning seven of the past 10 meetings, and another victory is not out of the question.
However, it could pay to play safe and back them with a nine-point headstart instead, with a spread that large very rare for a team boasting the talent of LeBron James and Luka Doncic.
The Thunder may rest players with the postseason just around the corner and the Lakers, led by James and Doncic, will be on hand to take advantage.
Nobody can deny Doncic’s big-game credentials after his stunning performances in the Dallas Mavericks’ run to the finals last season. The Mavs came up against OKC in the Western Conference semifinals during that run and Doncic, unsurprisingly, stole the show.
The Slovenian superstar registered a triple double in five of his six appearances during that series - he only missed out on a clean sweep of double doubles by a single assist in game one - and he could hurt the Thunder again, now with a new team.
Uncharacteristically, Doncic has gone four games without recording a double double. However, at odds-against, it could pay to back him to snap that streak against a Thunder team who he loves to face.
With their spot in first secured, the Thunder are simply playing to build momentum ahead of the playoffs and getting some of his star players in form will be Daigneault’s main priority in the closing games of the regular season.
Chet Holmgren is one of those who will need to be at his best if OKC are to go all the way and he has shown in his last two games that he is close to rediscovering his peak form.
The Thunder big man posted 22 points and 11 rebounds against an in-form Detroit Pistons outfit before notching 20 points against the Rockets, so a line of 21.5 for points and rebounds combined looks achievable on Sunday.
Holmgren has hit that line in three of his previous four appearances against the Lakers and he should fare even better this time around with LA no longer boasting the paint-dominating services of Anthony Davis.
