Los Angeles Lakers vs. Denver Nuggets Game 5: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

Teams are starting to clinch spots in the next round of the NBA playoffs and the Los Angeles Lakers will travel to Denver for an elimination Game 5 matchup with the Nuggets.

LA extended the series by winning Game 4 in front of their home fans, but does LeBron James and company have enough in the tank to get this series back to Los Angeles?

Let’s get into our betting picks for Game 5 between the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets and explain why we expect the defending champs to close this series out.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Denver Nuggets Game 5 betting picks and predictions

Nuggets ML (-300)

The Denver Nuggets will try to close out the series tonight in front of a rowdy crowd at Ball Arena.

The Lakers extended this series by winning Game 4, but it took a lot of things going right for LA to win that game.

Similar to Games 1-3, Los Angeles jumped out to a first-half lead, but this time, they held off Denver in the second.

They hit 52.2 percent of their shots while holding Denver to 44.8 percent shooting, and the Lakers also won the rebound and turnover battles while outscoring the Nuggets 72-52 in the paint.

This was a notable difference from Games 1 and 2 in Denver, as the Nuggets outscored LA in the paint by 10 in Game 1 and by 26 in Game 2.

LA should continue to attack Nikola Jokic at the rim, as it seems like they’re trying to tire out the big man. However, Jokic’s conditioning is extremely underrated as he played 34.9 minutes per game during the regular season (22nd in the NBA) and has logged 38+ minutes in every game this series while playing home games at high altitude in Denver.

The Lakers could keep this close, but Denver is just too good at home in the postseason.

Since last postseason, the Nuggets are 12-1 at home and have won by an average of 9.6 points per game. Looking further into these games shows four of those wins came against the Lakers, but their average win margin is just 6.0.

So, while the hosts should win tonight, it might be smart to add their money line to a Same Game Parlay instead of taking the spread. Bet on Denver to win at -300 ML against the Lakers in Game 5 tonight.

Over 216.5 points (-110)

There should be plenty of points put up by both teams in Game 5. Neither has had a hot shooting night this series, yet three of the games have finished with 217+ points. If Denver starts connecting from behind the arc, the Lakers don’t stand a chance, and that type of game could come tonight.

Last postseason, Denver averaged 113.5 points per game while the Lakers scored 112.3. These aren’t identical squads, but they’re structured similarly, and it’s only a matter of time before both teams start hitting their shots.

The Over is just 3-7 in these teams' last 10 meetings, but if the total were 216.5 - the same as tonight's line - in those 10 games, it would’ve gone 8-2.

LA needs its role players to shoot well from deep if they want to pull off an upset tonight, and Denver can score 115+ whether they shoot well or not. This game is more than capable of finishing with 220+ points, as Denver should contribute 115+, and the Lakers can put up 105+ on their own.

LeBron historically shows up for elimination games, but Denver has too much talent for him to take them down alone. Expect LA’s role players to step up tonight, and although they may not have enough to win, this game should surpass Over 216.5 points at -110.

LeBron James Over 26.5 points (-115)

The final pick centers around LeBron James, who could produce a characteristically leading performance in another elimination game.

LeBron has only played in three elimination games since joining the Lakers, but he’s scored 30, 40 and 29 points in those three games, in which he has a 1-2 record. The 30-point performance came against the Nuggets on Saturday.

As stated above, the Nuggets should win tonight, but that doesn't mean LeBron won’t go out with a bang.

The Nuggets held LeBron to 27, 26 and 26 points in Games 1-3, but he woke up in Game 4 to extend this series. It’s truly amazing how the 39-year-old is still producing at such a high level and that should not stop tonight.

So long as the Nuggets contain LA’s role players, they should cruise to victory, but LeBron is still more than capable of contributing at least 27 points.
