A new week in the 2024/25 NBA season tips off with a humongous 15-game slate on Monday, which includes a showdown between the Indiana Pacers and Dallas Mavericks at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
The Pacers are off to a slow start at 2-4, while the Mavericks are 4-2 after blowing out the Orlando Magic on Sunday night.
The Mavericks are playing the second leg of a back-to-back after hosting the Magic on Sunday, but there is no need to be concerned about fatigue being a factor. That game was over by halftime, as Dallas led 65-40 after 24 minutes on the way to a 108-85 victory.
Luka Doncic was the only Maverick who logged more than 29 minutes (he finished with 32 minutes of court time) and basically none of those were high-leverage minutes. Moreover, the Mavs don’t have to travel as they are once again at home on Monday night and their legs should be ready to go for the Pacers.
Indiana has been all over the place so far this season. Head coach Rick Carlisle’s club upset the defending NBA Champion Boston Celtics but preceded that result with a loss to Orlando and followed it with a setback against the New Orleans Pelicans this past Friday.
Moreover, Aaron Nesmith is out with an ankle injury and Andrew Nembhard is questionable for Monday because of a knee issue. Tyrese Haliburton is averaging just 14.0 points per game while shooting a horrendous 33.7 percent from the floor and 24.0 percent from three-point range.
Dallas’ only real deficiency is rebounding, ranking 24th in the league in margin on the boards. Fortunately for the Mavs, the Pacers are even worse (27th). Indy is not playing well right now and is unlikely to expose any weakness in the opposition.
The Mavericks are 3-1 at home so far this season and should be able to pick up another comfortable win at the American Airlines Center on Monday.
Don't be surprised if this one develops into a shootout. The Pacers are playing at an electric pace, just as they did last season. They are sixth in the NBA in possessions per game, including third in that statistic over the past three contests.
Indiana has given up at least 123 points in half of its games this season, but it has only scored more than 120 points in a single game once so far.
The Mavericks have reached the 120-point mark twice so far this season and probably would have done the same on Sunday if they had not called off the dogs in the third quarter of a blowout. Doncic comes in at 28.0 PPG and Kyrie Irving is not too far behind by contributing 23.3 PPG.
Klay Thompson is off to a decent start with his new squad, averaging 14.5 PPG and shooting 37.0 percent from downtown for Dallas. Daniel Gafford is also scoring in double-figures after going for 18 on a 9-of-13 effort from the field against the Magic.
Both teams will likely play small, which further increases the tempo. The trends are also pointing to a high-scoring affair, as nine of Indiana’s last 11 trips to Dallas have gone Over the total.
