The Golden State Warriors are hoping to shake a three-game losing streak when they meet Western Conference rivals the Phoenix Suns.
Kevin Durant comes up against his former Warrior teammates in this clash which has huge implications for the incredibly tight standings in the West.
The Suns haven’t quite seen their Big 3 click yet, but Durant has had an incredible impact on their results this term and he’s likely to be key once again.
The Suns are 10-8 this season, which has left them ninth in the Western Conference. However, they had made a strong start under new coach Mike Budenholzer before Durant and Bradley Beal’s absences saw them hit a five-game losing skid.
In fact, the Suns are 1-6 in their games without Durant this season, while they’ve won nine of the 11 games he has featured in. It’s little surprise that the former NBA Finals MVP is crucial to the Suns’ prospects. However, they’re starting to look like a force under Budenholzer.
Offseason additions helped, with draftee Ryan Dunn impressing. Adding point guard Tyus Jones has brought an organiser to the Suns going forward, reducing the need for their star scorers to also carry the creative burden. With those three superstars able to move around off the ball, opposition defences have a huge test keeping them quiet.
The Warriors have had a strong campaign so far, with the depth they added in the offseason helping them to third place in the West. The Warriors have seen results turn of late though, dropping each of their last three games. Given how the Suns are playing, back Durant to inspire another victory.
The Suns got their big three of Devin Booker, Beal and Durant back together two games ago and their offense has been purring since. They scored 244 points across clashes with the LA Lakers and Brooklyn Nets this week
The Suns have an impressive blend of options with those three scorers, ball-handler Jones and big man Jusuf Nurkic as their starting five. They have five players averaging in double-figures, with Royce O’Neal not far behind at 9.4 points per game.
The Suns’ big three are averaging over 70 points per game between them and it’s hard to see how the Warriors shut them down. Golden State have a raft of perimeter shooters but they lack lock-down defenders. The movement of this Suns offense should cause problems, so they’re good value to top 120 points.
Beal is firmly the third-star behind Booker and Durant, but that could be a positive in a clash with the Warriors. While Golden State will likely put Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins to work on those two All-Stars, Beal has the chance to exploit some easier matchups.
Beal had just started to get going before missing five games earlier this month. He had scored 28 points against Sacramento and another 24 against Utah before that stretch on the sidelines. He’s returned with 23 points against the Lakers and 17 against the Nets, so back him to clear a 16.5 line.
