Two of the top five in the Western Conference meet on Friday night, as the Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors clash at the Chase Center.
The Nuggets have the edge in the standings, but it’s the Warriors who go into the matchup in better form and could be ready to end a nightmare run against Denver.
Steph Curry is fresh from a stellar performance in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers and this could be another statement display from the GSW star, as we edge closer to the playoffs.
The Nuggets were involved in a memorable clash with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night at the Ball Arena.
Despite Nikola Jokic dominating the highlight reels, with 61 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds, Denver ended up losing by a point in OT.
That game must have taken a lot out of the roster, with the Nuggets going on to lose 106-113 to the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday.
Michael Malone’s men are now back on the road and looking to end a two-game losing run, while the Nuggets have also lost six of their last 10 games.
The Warriors, meanwhile, have won four on the spin heading into Friday’s showdown, with victories on the road over the Pelicans, Spurs, Grizzlies and Lakers.
A 37-point haul has moved Curry up to 11th in the NBA stats, with the guard now averaging 24.6 points per game.
There are no other GSW names in the top 50 and the Warriors will need Jimmy Butler to step up and shine in and around the paint.
The former Miami and Chicago Small forward has averaged 17.25 over the last four games and may have to be at the top-end of that average to help Golden State extend their unbeaten run.
The Nuggets have certainly had the upper hand in recent matchups between the two sides, with a nine-game winning run against Friday’s opponents.
That includes a 105-114 ‘W’ when the two sides last met at the Chase Center last month, while Denver ran out 115-119 in Colorado back in December.
The Nuggets will make a late decision on whether Peyton Watson will feature, after the swingman missed the Spurs defeat with a knee problem.
Julian Strawther is another doubt because of a sprained knee, but Small forward Michael Porter Jr will return having missed the last two games due to personal issues.
Jimmy Butler is expected to start for GSW, despite having a strapping around his left forearm in the win over the Lakers.
If the Warriors have to manage Butler’s court time, then Jonathan Kuminga will likely receive the chance to replace him.
Curry has not enjoyed a good run against the Nuggets, failing to score more than 24 points in GSW’s last three meetings with Denver.
He goes into this clash though having found his rhythm in the last week, firing 37 points against the Lakers off the back of a 52-point haul in the win over the Memphis Grizzlies.
With some fitness concerns over six-time NBA All Star Butler, Curry will be aware that he needs to step up to the plate and lead by example.
The 37-year-old’s last 30+ tally against the Nuggets came back in January last year, when Warriors lost by three points on their home court.
When you consider the recent scoring form of these two teams, the 230.0 target looks likely to be beaten.
Denver - sat third in the West - are currently third on the points-scoring stats chart, averaging 120.9 points per game.
GSW may be down in 18th, with a 113.8 average, but the points have been flowing in recent weeks for Steve Kerr’s men.
The Warriors have averaged 135 in their last three games, racking up 123 against the Lakers, 134 in victory over the Grizzlies and firing 148 against the Spurs.
