The 2025 NBA Play-In Tournament is nearing its conclusion and Friday's card includes Dallas Mavericks facing off against Memphis Grizzlies in a game that will determine which team advances to the playoffs as the final seed in the Western Conference.
Both of these teams have had very turbulent seasons to this point, with the Grizzlies having already fired their coach and looking long and hard at their future.
The Mavericks have never truly recovered from suffering a couple of brutal injuries and other losses, including the decision to trade 25-year-old superstar Luka Doncic to a conference rival back in February.
Will Dallas get back to the postseason, or will it be Memphis that advances to take on the No. 1 seed Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round?
Tuesday’s game was a true gut-wrenching loss for the Grizzlies, as Memphis rallied from a 20-point deficit on the road to eventually take the lead in the fourth quarter, only to squander that lead and ultimately lose in the final seconds at the hands of the Golden State Warriors.
Now, a Memphis team in turmoil will head home for a date with another team that’s dealt with a lot of drama and uncertainty this season in what is sure to be a compelling contest.
As for their opponent, no team made more headlines this season than Dallas, in tandem with the Los Angeles Lakers, from whom the Mavs acquired Anthony Davis in exchange for Luka Doncic.
Unfortunately for the Mavs, they were on the wrong end of that trade and the next two months have gone about as poorly as possible for Dallas.
The Mavericks are a team that’s dealt with a ton of adversity all season long, on and off the court.
Even when factoring out the Doncic trade, Dallas also lost star guard Kyrie Irving to a torn ACL earlier this season and played without P.J. Washington, Davis and Dereck Lively II for long stretches.
They looked like a shell of themselves with so many players out of the lineup, but Dallas found something offensively in Wednesday’s victory with Daniel Gafford, Klay Thompson and Dante Exum all having strong games, along with great efforts from Davis and Washington.
In a game that should feature plenty of variance, let’s back the underdog Mavericks +7.0 at -110 in Memphis on Friday.
Given that a high-scoring, fast-paced gameplan would traditionally go hand-in-hand with the Grizzlies to cover this spread, the Under would usually be the expected side in this game.
However, our expert is of the opinion that we’ll actually see a bit more scoring than expected in this one.
While conventional wisdom would suggest that Dallas has to win games with its defense these days, the Mavericks have been getting it done with their offense of late, including a 120-point performance against Sacramento on Wednesday.
Even with the Mavericks missing some valuable production in the backcourt, the supporting cast is more than capable of picking up the slack when playing in a game of this magnitude, especially against a Grizzlies defense that has been a shell of itself over the last couple of months.
As for Memphis, the Grizzlies are still an efficient offense (sixth in offensive rating), and we have no doubt that Ja Morant and company will be able to score against a Dallas defense that is outside of the top 20 in defensive rating this season.
There is a real possibility for the Mavericks to cover the number on Friday while we still see the teams combine for Over 220.5 points at -110 and that is the only way our expert can look in this matchup.
