For the first time since their Western Conference-altering blockbuster trade prior to the deadline earlier this month, Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers go head-to-head on the court when they collide at Crypto.com Arena in L.A. on Tuesday.
Dallas (31-27) had won three in a row before losing at Golden State this past Sunday, while Los Angeles (34-21) is 12-3 in its last 15 overall and 2-1 since the All-Star break.
Only one of the two superstars involved in the trade will be taking the court on Tuesday night. Luka Doncic is already in fine form for Los Angeles, but Dallas is currently without Anthony Davis.
The 31-year-old forward suffered an adductor injury during his debut with his new team on February 8 and will be sidelined for at least two more weeks.
The Mavericks are still playing decent basketball despite missing Davis and they remain inside the playoff cut line at No. 8 in the Western Conference standings.
However, there has been improvement on the road, where the Mavs are 13-16 this season compared to 18-11 at home.
Dallas is 1-4 in its last five road outings after getting clobbered by Golden State 126-102 last weekend, a stretch that also includes a 15-point loss at Detroit and a setback against a struggling Philadelphia squad.
LA, on the other hand, bounced back from a loss to Charlotte by winning consecutive games against Portland and Denver on Thursday and Saturday.
The Lakers were especially impressive while hammering the Nuggets 123-100, with Doncic leading his team in points (32), rebounds (10) and assists (seven). He also had four steals and one block.
After easing into his role in a new uniform and recovering from an injury of his own, it’s safe to say that Doncic is now comfortable and back to being his normal self.
Look for the Lakers to keep their momentum going by taking care of business with relative ease in front of the home crowd.
With Doncic gone and Davis on the shelf, Dallas has scored more than 116 points in regulation only twice in its last 10 games.
The Mavs managed just 102 against the Warriors on Sunday while turning the ball over 18 times.
Now they have to face a Los Angeles squad that is sixth in the West in scoring defense and has limited its last three opponents to 100, 102 and 100 points.
Moreover, neither team plays at a particularly fast pace. The Mavericks are No.18 league wide in possessions per game (102.5), while the Lakers check in at No.22 in that department (101.4).
Therefore, all things considered, the under looks like the smart play to make.
Hachimura has been red hot for the Lakers in February. The former Gonzaga standout has poured in at least 20 points on five occasions this month and has scored above his season average of 13.4 ppg in nine of the last 11 contests.
It is also worth noting that Hachimura is an extremely effective slasher who makes a living at getting to the basket.
He has made 129 of 196 field-goal attempts inside five feet from the basket this season, while he has made 114 shots from all other areas of the floor.
With Davis not there to protect the paint for the Mavs Hachimura should be in line for another big day at the office.
