The NBA Cup gets underway on Tuesday night, with two Western Conference rivals going toe-to-toe at the Chase Center in one of eight games.
Neither the Dallas Mavericks nor the Golden State Warriors made the knockout stages in last year’s inaugural event, after finishing third in their groups.
The Warriors head into this year’s tournament in better form, with Golden State sitting third in the Western Conference with an 8-2 record.
After failing to make the playoffs last year, the Warriors look to be a team on a mission to right the wrongs and challenge for an eighth NBA title.
Only one team in the league – the Cleveland Cavaliers – has scored more points than GSW at this stage of the season.
Golden State are averaging 121.3 points per game and are third in the league for Points Differential (+11.8) heading into the NBA Cup.
It’s not a surprise to see Steph Curry leading the franchise in points scored, with the 10-time All Star averaging 22.0 points while having featured in seven of their 10 games.
There were concerns that Klay Thompson’s off-season switch to Friday’s opponents would be a big setback for the Warriors, but Buddy Hield has stepped up.
The former Pelicans and Pacers man has averaged 18.0 points since moving from Philadelphia, including 27 in the 127-121 win over Houston earlier this month. Hield is also averaging 4.0 successful three-pointers per game.
In contrast, the 5-5 Mavericks are 15th in the scoring list, averaging 114.1 per game, and sit 11th in the Western Conference.
Dallas head to San Francisco having lost two of their three games on the road and having been hit hard by injuries this season. Because of that, back their two-game losing streak to be extended tonight.
Having recovered from a back issue that plagued him during his one season as a Philadelphia 76er, guard De’Anthony Melton looks to be back to peak health and is firing on all cylinders.
The ex-Memphis star missed five games with the injury, but has returned for the most recent two match-ups and impressed in the 116-127 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Melton fired 19 points in Oklahoma, as well as claiming 10 rebounds and 22 assists, going 5-8 from three-point range.
The 26-year-old will feel confident he can back that up against Dallas and beat the points spread, which sits at 11.5.
With the Warriors likely to be targeting former teammate Thompson, the Mavericks will need their main men to deliver again with big points.
Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving both rank inside the top 12 NBA points scorers this season, with things starting to really click for Irving in recent games.
After firing 29 points in defeat to the Phoenix Suns, he followed that up with 43 in the victory over the Denver Nuggets.
It’s also worth noting that Irving scored 23 points with 10 assists in Dallas’ 10-point victory over GSW in Texas back in March.
