The Los Angeles Angels have looked like a mediocre team for most of the season, but have recently been playing some excellent baseball.
The Angels are 7-3 in their last 10 games and have now won two games in a row, the most recent a 9-6 win on Monday night against the Texas Rangers.
Los Angeles trailed by as much as 5-1 through the first three innings, but slowly made their way back into the game with some timely hitting.
Shohei Ohtani tied the game with a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning, before hitting his second home run in the top of the 12th to give the Angels their first lead of the night, which ended up being enough to win the game.
With their second consecutive win, the Angels are now 37-31 on the season and have put themselves into the Wild Card race.
They are currently trailing the Houston Astros for the final Wild Card spot by one game, so even though there is still plenty of baseball left this season, the Angels could be a team to watch out for as we head into the middle part of the season.
The offense for LA has been impressive, as they are averaging 4.9 runs per game which ranks sixth in the league.
During their brief two-game win streak, the Angels have scored nine runs in both games, while allowing an average of five runs per game. Overall, their pitching will still need to improve as they have a team ERA of 4.20, which ranks 17th in the league.
That being said, they did well as a staff on Monday night to limit the powerful Rangers’ offense to just one additional run after getting hit early in the game.
Going forward, if the Angels’ pitching staff can be more consistent, they have the offense to be able to make a push for the postseason.
Los Angeles are +2500 to win the World Series, +1300 to land the American League and +190 to make the playoffs.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are no doubt one of the biggest surprises this season and only continue to get better.
With their 9-8 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night, the Diamondbacks have now won six games in a row, which is tied for the longest current win streak in the league.
This win streak has seen them open up a four-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West division. During said win streak, the Diamondbacks’ offense has been on fire and they are averaging eight runs per game.
Overall this season, they are averaging 5.22 runs per game and that has seen them climb to fourth in total runs.
Pitching, however, still remains a slight concern, seeing that the Diamondbacks have a team ERA of 4.32 and rank 19th in the league in this category.
Over the last six games, the Diamondbacks are allowing an average of 4.33 runs per game, allowing five runs or more in four of the six games. If they want to make a legitimate run to the postseason, their pitching will no doubt need to improve.
That being said, their offense has been good enough to carry them through their pitching woes, but it is unlikely that their offense will be able to do this on a nightly basis going forward.
The Diamondbacks are -280 to make the playoffs and +2000 to win the World Series.
Despite the Oakland Athletics having one of the worst starts in MLB history, they pulled off a miraculous upset against the MLB best Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.
With a 4-3 win over the Rays, the Athletics have now won six games in a row, which has “improved” their overall record to 18-50.
While it doesn’t mean much, the A’s are now closing in on the Kansas City Royals to avoid having the worst record in the league.
Just one game behind the Royals, this will likely be the battle at the bottom of the league for the rest of the season.
While their win streak is likely to end rather shortly, Oakland can gain confidence from the fact that they can win games going forward, including beating some of the MLB’s best teams.
