Everything you need to know about American UFC lightweight fighter Max Holloway.
Max Holloway has won 26-7 of his MMA fights with 12 of those victories obtained inside the distance. Six of his seven defeats have been by decision.
Holloway’s background is in kickboxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. After four MMA victories, he made his UFC debut in 2012 when he gave Dustin Poirer a decent test despite losing.
It took him a while to find his feet at the level, but a unanimous decision defeat to Conor McGregor in August 2013 proved to be the catalyst to push him to be one of UFC’s top featherweights.
He gained notable victories over Cub Swanson, Jeremy Stephens and Charles Oliviera, and a unanimous victory over Richard Lamas earned him the opportunity to take on Anthony Pettis for the interim featherweight title in 2016 in Toronto, Canada.
Body kicks and punches were enough to earn him a third-round stoppage that night against Pettis and it was a sign of great things to come as his next bout was against Jose Aldo for the featherweight title.
Holloway won the unification bout by technical knockout in the third round and when challenger Frankie Edgar was ruled out of his first defense due to injury, he beat Aldo again in a rematch.
A successful defense against American Brian Ortega followed before he took Poirier on once more, this time for the interim UFC lightweight title in Atlanta in April 2019, but he was defeated on a unanimous decision.
While he finally took his chance to beat Edgar the following July, there was disappointment a few months later when he was beaten in a featherweight title fight by Alexander Volkanovski in Las Vegas.
The Australian has subsequently proved to be Holloway's stumbling block, beating him in two further title fights, the most recent of which was in July 2022.
Volkanovski has also struggled to move up to lightweight and he also lost his featherweight crown to Georgian Ilia Topuria in February, so Holloway stands behind the Aussie in second in the UFC’s featherweight rankings.
Holloway won his bout against Justin Gaethje for the BMF title at UFC 300 via knockout with one second remaining, capping a dramatic sequence where both fighters were throwing haymakers as they chased the win at the end of the fight.
For his efforts against Gaethje, Holloway won bonuses for Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night, which proved more lucrative than usual as UFC CEO Dana White raised the fight bonuses to $300,000 for UFC 300.
Max Holloway’s next fight is yet to be announced.
Max Holloway’s last fight was a win over Justin Gaethje for the BMF title at UFC 300. Holloway won via knockout with one second remaining, and he took home Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night bonuses.
Holloway was born on December 4, 1991, in Honolulu, Hawaii and is currently 32 years old.
Holloway is 5ft 11in tall and weighs 145 pounds.
He started his career in 2010 as a lightweight and goes back to that weight for his clash against Gaethje. However, he has spent most of his career fighting as a featherweight, having first fought at that weight in 2012.
Holloway’s net worth is currently estimated to be around $2 million.
