This main card at UFC 301 has a number of Brazilian fighters waiting for their breakout moment with Vitor Petrino in the best position to capitalize.
The 26-year-old faces former Light Heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith who, since his shot at Jon Jones in 2019, has struggled to regain any momentum and is currently on a 1-3 run.
Petrino is 4-0 in the UFC in 13 months as he now knocks on the door of the top 10 of the division.
The raucous Brazilian crowd could play a part in some of these encounters and may just boost the confidence of the hometown fighters to get some early finishes.
However, we expect a 21-fight UFC veteran like Smith to be smart enough to use all of his experience to try and nullify Petrino early on.
Petrino hits hard as his pro record that is littered with KOs suggests. He is also a powerful wrestler, and with youth on his side, he could well grind Smith down if he survives the first round.
With his fast-paced style and power there is a good chance that Petrino catches Smith on the feet and knocks him out.
The 37-year-old Smith was KO’d by Khalil Rountree Jr. in his last fight in December, but two of his last five defeats have also seen him stopped by ground and pound.
With Petrino’s style and strength expect takedowns particularly in the second half of the fight where the Brazilian will look for any opportunity to get his ground shots off.
