MLS Power Rankings: Portland pose a threat to Inter Miami for MLS Cup

The third week of the 2024 Major League Soccer season is drawing to a close and already both the Eastern and Western Conferences are starting to take shape.

Following another high-octane weekend of MLS action, here is a look at the current season power rankings.

1. Inter Miami

W2, D1, L0, 1st Eastern Conference

Inter Miami took a rest from their MLS exploits on Friday to draw 2-2 with Nashville in the CONCACAF Champions Cup but they can have no complaints about their start to the domestic season.

A 5-0 thrashing of state rivals Orlando last Saturday brought them up to a tally of seven points from three games and braces from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi could be a sign of things to come.

2. Portland Timbers

W2, D1, L0, 1st Western Conference

The MLS season is in its infancy but Portland look as though they could be among Inter Miami's closest challengers for the MLS Cup.

They topped the Western Conference prior to Sunday's match with seven points from three games, most recently digging deep to record a 2-1 comeback win over New York City with Evander's winner coming in the 97th minute.

3. Minnesota United

W2, D1, L0, 2nd Western Conference

Minnesota are another MLS club on seven points from three games and their most recent win was arguably their most enjoyable.

Despite losing the shot count 22-9 against Orlando, a 95th-minute strike from Bongokuhle Hlongwane handed them all three points in Florida.

4. Columbus Crew

W2, D1, L0, 2nd Eastern Conference

Last season's MLS Cup winners Columbus Crew have also enjoyed an unbeaten start and they have been pretty tight at the back, conceding only twice.

Having beaten Houston Dynamo 1-0 in the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Thursday, they were not fazed by the quick turnaround at the weekend, beating Chicago 2-1.

5. New York Red Bulls

W2, D1, L0, 3rd Eastern Conference

After finishing eighth in the Eastern Conference last year, New York Red Bulls will be pleased to be back in the upper echelons of MLS.

They too are on seven points after successive 2-1 wins over Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas.

6. Toronto FC

W2, D1, L0, 4th Eastern Conference

Hot on the heels of New York Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference are Toronto, who are yet to concede a goal in MLS in 2024.

They have kept successive clean sheets against Cincinnati, New England and Charlotte, beating the last two sides 1-0.

7. St Louis City

W1, D2, L0, 3rd Western Conference

Last season's Western Conference champions St Louis are in the mix again at the top with a haul of five points from three games, although they could soon be leapfrogged.

They twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Austin at the weekend, although they dominated the game with 17 shots to Austin's five.

8. LA Galaxy

W1, D1, L0, 4th Western Conference

LA Galaxy have played just the two games in MLS this season but they have given a good impression of themselves, firstly drawing with Inter Miami in a game they deserved to win before easing to a 3-1 win over San Jose.

9. Vancouver Whitecaps

W1, D1, L0, 5th Western Conference

Vancouver are another side to have played only twice but they have made their games count, taking four points off Charlotte and San Jose.

10. DC United

W1, D1, L0, 5th Eastern Conference

DC United have been one of the more enterprising teams in the early stages of the MLS season, scoring a total of five goals against New England and Portland in their last two games - keep an eye on in-form Christian Benteke.

11. CF Montreal

W1, D1, L0, 6th Eastern Conference

Montreal have put in decent performances in successive road trips to Orlando and Dallas and have a decent playoff position to show for it in the Eastern Conference.

12. CF Cincinnati

W1, D1, L0, 7th Eastern Conference

Cincy are another club dealing with the distraction of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, which meant their latest MLS clash against DC United was scheduled for Sunday.

Their first two games in MLS this year yielded a win against Chicago and a draw with Toronto.

13. Real Salt Lake

W1, D1, L2, 6th Western Conference

Real Salt Lake occupy a playoff berth in MLS but it is worth noting they are ahead of the pack with four games played.

They have lost two of them against Inter Miami and Colorado and still have work to do.

14. Colorado Rapids

W1, D1, L1, 7th Western Conference

Colorado could not have performed much worse than they did in 2023 but there is genuine reason for optimism at the club after a win, draw and defeat from their first three games.

15. Atlanta United

W1, D0, L1, 9th Eastern Conference

Atlanta claimed their first MLS win of the season in style on Saturday, thrashing strugglers New England Revolution 4-1, and that could be the result that gets their season going.

16. Charlotte FC

17. Los Angeles FC

18. FC Dallas

19. Sporting Kansas City

20. Philadelphia Union

21. Austin FC

22. Nashville SC

23. Chicago Fire

24. Houston Dynamo

25. Seattle Sounders

26. Orlando City

27. New York City

28. San Jose Earthquakes

29. New England Revolution
