MLS Power Rankings: FC Cincinnati lead the way despite defeat

There are 14 rounds remaining in the regular season in MLS and the battle for the playoff spots remains intense.

We're back with our power rankings for all 29 teams.

1. FC Cincinnati

Cincinnati are the runaway leaders in the Eastern Conference and boast comfortably the best record across MLS as a whole.

Cincy suffered just a second defeat of the campaign on Saturday as they went down 3-0 at Wayne Rooney's DC United, but they still hold a commanding seven-point lead at the top of the East.

2. New England Revolution

New England Revolution did manage to cut the gap to Cincinnati with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Toronto FC.

Deandre Kerr gave Toronto an early lead at Gillette Stadium but goals from Bobby Wood and Giacomo Vrioni saw the Revs fight back to claim the spoils.

3. Nashville SC

Nashville, who are back in the Eastern Conference after spending 2022 in the West, slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Columbus Crew as they suffered a second successive road loss.

The Music are back at home in the next round of fixtures and they will be looking to end their mini-slump against DC United.

4. Philadelphia Union

Philadelphia Union won the East last season and remain well placed to mount another serious challenge this season.

Union crushed Inter Miami 4-1 on Saturday, scoring three goals without reply in the first half to strengthen their hold on a top four place in the East.

5. St. Louis City SC

MLS new boys St Louis City are enjoying a fine debut season as they lead the way in the Western Conference.

The Missouri outfit claimed an important 2-1 win at San Jose Earthquakes as they brought a four-game slump to an end, with St Louis managing just one point from the last available 12 prior to their victory on Saturday.

6. Los Angeles FC

Defending champions LAFC sit second in the West but are in the midst of a tough period and they fell short again on Saturday with a 3-2 defeat at home to Vancouver Whitecaps.

LAFC managed to fight back to within one goal twice but they couldn't force an equaliser, despite dominating for large periods in the second half.

7. Columbus Crew

Two-time champions Columbus Crew missed out on the postseason last year but are on course to mount a playoff bid in 2023 and they claimed a 2-0 win over key rivals Nashville on Saturday.

The Crew sit fifth and are five points clear of Montreal in eighth spot. They also have a forward in form as Christian Ramirez scored his fourth goal in as many games in the win over Nashville.

8. Seattle Sounders FC

Seattle sit third in the West but have found wins hard to come by of late, with just one victory in their last eight.

The Sounders played out a drab goalless draw with Orlando City on Saturday.

9. Atlanta United FC

Atlanta United sit inside the playoff spots in the East but their road form remains a concern and they recently went down 4-0 at New York Red Bulls.

United have managed just one win in 10 attempts on the road in MLS and have picked up just eight of their 29 points on their travels.

10. Orlando City SC

Orlando are clinging on to the final playoff place in the East and will view the point they picked up at a tough Seattle side as a positive result.

11. Houston Dynamo FC

Houston are in fourth spot in the West but slipped to a disappointing 3-0 defeat at Texas rivals Austin FC on Saturday, ending a three-game winning run.

12. San Jose Earthquakes

San Jose are now winless in three after their home loss to St Louis and after a fine start, are in danger of slipping down the standings.

13. Real Salt Lake

Real Salt Lake are one of the form teams in MLS as they extended their unbeaten run to five games on Saturday.

The Claret and Cobalt fell 2-0 behind early on at home to Minnesota United but managed to claim a share of the spoils as Danny Musovski pulled a goal back in 79 minutes and Justen Glad grabbed an equaliser in the eighth minute of added time.

14. CF Montréal

Montreal were held to a 0-0 draw at Charlotte on Saturday but that result does mean they have managed three successive clean sheets as they bid to force their way into the automatic postseason spots in the Eastern Conference.

15. D.C. United

DC United produced arguably the performance of the weekend with their comprehensive 3-0 win over pacesetters Cincy in the capital.

All three goals came in the first half, with Pedro Santos, Derrick Williams and Cristian Dajome on target for United.

16. FC Dallas

FC Dallas didn't have a game this weekend and will look to half a run of back-to-back defeats when they host LAFC next weekend.

17. Austin FC

Austin FC sit eighth in the West and could be on the up after giving their hopes of securing an automatic playoff place a boost with their 3-0 win over Houston.

18. Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Vancouver extended their unbeaten run in MLS to four games with an eye-catching 3-2 win at defending champions LAFC.

19. Charlotte FC

Charlotte are now winless in five after they drew for the third successive game in their goalless stalemate with Montreal.

20. New York Red Bulls

New York Red Bulls sit outside the playoff places but they remain in postseason contention and they secured the biggest win of the weekend with a 4-0 demolition of Atlanta.

Franuel Amaya scored twice in the rout as he grabbed his first goals of the campaign.

21. Chicago Fire FC

Chicago Fire have had a difficult season so far but they may have started to turn a corner and they recorded a second successive victory with a 1-0 win at Sporting Kansas City.

22. Portland Timbers

Portland are 10th in the West and they will feel they missed an opportunity on Saturday after blowing a 1-0 lead at home to an out of form New York City outfit.

23. Sporting Kansas City

Sporting KC fell further back in the fight for postseason action in the West after their 1-0 loss at home to Chicago.

24. Minnesota United FC

Minnesota appeared on course to end a five-game winless run across all competitions after opening up a 2-0 lead at Real Salt Lake but ultimately they had to settle for a point.

25. New York City FC

NYCFC fought back to claim a point and draw for the fifth game in a row as a goal from Keaton Parks saw them claim a 1-1 draw at Portland.

City need to find a way to turn draws into wins if they are to challenge for a playoff spot, however, as they are winless in 11 in MLS.

26. Toronto FC

Toronto FC slipped to a 2-1 loss at New England Revolution and have managed just one win in their last 10 league fixtures.

27. Inter Miami CF

Lionel Messi is expected to make his Inter Miami debut towards the end of next month and the arrival of the Argentine superstar can't come soon enough for their Eastern Conference strugglers.

The Florida outfit have 13 defeats in 18 games and were hammered 4-1 at Philadelphia on Saturday.

28. LA Galaxy

LA Galaxy's playoff hopes already appear to be over and they played out a goalless draw with fellow strugglers Colorado Rapids on Saturday.

29. Colorado Rapids

Bottom of the Western Conference and of our Power Rankings, Colorado Rapids failed to score for the third consecutive game in their stalemate with Galaxy.
