Major League Soccer (MLS) announced in 2025 that it will be changing its competition calendar to align with the world's top soccer leagues.
The change will come into effect the summer of 2027, with the new season running from the summer to the spring, rather than Spring to early-winter. This switch will align the league with Europe's premier competitions. MLS will work with MLS Players association to finalize an agreement on a transition plan.

Why is MLS Changing the Schedule
There are many reasons the MLS is eager to switch the schedule.
MLS commissioner, Don Garber, stated that "Aligning our schedule with the world’s top leagues will strengthen our clubs’ global competitiveness, create better opportunities in the transfer market, and ensure our Audi MLS Cup Playoffs take center stage without interruption. It marks the start of a new era for our league and for soccer in North America."
The MLS Cup Playoffs will now no longer compete with the NFL and college football season, but will instead compete with the NBA and NHL playoffs.
It will also align with the traditional European football calendar, making transfers between MLS and European teams easier than previous years. The calendar will also better align with global international breaks.
What is the new MLS schedule?
The 2027/28 MLS regular would begin in late July 2027, and the MLS Cup would be played in late may 2028, concluding the first season.
MLS will adopt a break in January, and have no games played in one of the coldest months of the year.
How will MLS transition to the new schedule?
Prior to the switch, MLS will have a shortened 14-game season from February to May 2027.
The results from this transitional season will determine qualification for other club competitions likes the Leagues Cup, Canadian Championship, and Concacaf Champions Cup.

PRO: Aligning with global transfer market activity
Switching to the calendar used by most major leagues around the world will help MLS be more convincing during the key transfer windows. Most player transfers occur during the summer offseason, so aligning the offseason will allow for players to join prior to the season rather than in the middle of the season.
CON: February is cold in North America
For teams like Toronto, Minnesota, Chicago, Colorado, and New England, playing in outdoor stadiums during December and February will raise the risk of inclement weather. The December break will be helpful, but winter is a long season in the northern United States and Canada.
PRO: Aligns with the FIFA international calendar
The new MLS schedule will be mindful of FIFA international match windows, and minimize conflicts between MLS league matches and national team call-ups for players. Particularly during summer tournaments.
