There have been a total of 119 World Series starting back in 1903, but only 117 World Series have been played. The two exceptions were in 1904 when there was a boycott and in 1994 when the players went on strike and the MLB was forced to cancel the rest of the season, including the playoffs.
To no surprise, the New York Yankees have been the most successful franchise when it comes to winning a World Series. They have won it a total of 27 times, but have not been back since 2009.
In terms of World Series appearances, the Yankees lead the way again with 40.
