The Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers on Friday and will look to do a quick double over the World Series champions to complete a series win in Game 2 on Saturday night.
It’s an AL West showdown in Seattle as the Rangers and Mariners engage in an important series. The Mariners have been able to hold a small lead in the division for the last few months, but the Rangers are in the midst of a push for first.
On the mound on Saturday night is an excellent pitching matchup between Nathan Eovaldi of the Rangers and George Kirby of the Mariners. These two aces are very alike, so neither team has an obvious pitching advantage. However, one team might have an advantage at the plate with the way they have been swinging lately.
Seattle has won five of their last six games and have seen an increase in production at the plate in the last few weeks. It was a sluggish start to the year for the Mariners as Julio Rodriguez was struggling and the offseason acquisitions weren’t doing much for the team. But lately, Rodriguez, J.P. Crawford, and Mitch Haniger have been excellent.
The Mariners can also count on Kirby to put up an excellent performance since he’s allowed two earned runs or less in nine of his 14 starts. With their ace on the hill and a hot offense at the plate, back the Mariners in game two of the series.
In Friday's series opener, the two teams combined for five runs. It was a solid pitching matchup between Andrew Heaney and Luis Castillo which was followed by a lockdown performance from both bullpens.
Low scoring games have been a common theme for the Mariners lately since their last four games have all seen a total of seven runs or less. Plus, Kirby prefers to pitch at home. In six starts at T-Mobile Park, Kirby has a 2.72 ERA and has limited hitters to just a .207 batting average. But on the road, his ERA balloons to 4.70 and he’s allowing a .264 batting average. In summary, this game being in Seattle benefits the under.
Eovaldi missed several weeks in May because of an injury, but since he’s been back, he’s been better than ever. In three starts since returning, Eovaldi has allowed five runs and 13 hits in 15.2 innings. His control is back to normal and he’s getting plenty of swings and misses on his offspeed pitches.
This pitching matchup should be a good one, so take the under seven before it dips.
