San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers play the series finale in Southern California today.

Yu Darvish will get the start for the Padres and he will be opposed by James Paxton for the Dodgers, and the oddsmakers have tabbed the home team as the favorite. San Diego was able to win the first game of the series and the Dodgers bounced back with a win behind Gavin Stone in game two.

To no surprise, the Dodgers have been fantastic in the first two weeks. Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, and Freddie Freeman have been as good as advertised, and that has led to the Dodgers winning 11 of their first 17 games.

The Padres haven’t had the same amount of luck as they’ve won just 8 of their first 17 games, but a series win today would be crucial for San Diego. Let’s get into our preview of the matchup and our expert’s picks for the series finale.

San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers betting picks and predictions

Dodgers ML (-155)

The Dodgers were very active in the offseason, and their biggest move was signing the two-way phenom Ohtani. However, one of the most underrated acquisitions was signing the veteran James Paxton to round out an incredibly balanced starting rotation.

The lefty has made 2 starts with his new team and has allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in just 11 innings. Paxton doesn’t strike out many hitters, but he relies on weak contact to get outs which has been his key to success so far. And fortunately for Paxton, he’s backed by the best offense in the league.

Darvish comes into this matchup with a respectable 3.86 ERA in 4 starts, but he’s shown some warning signs of decline. A big worry is the 54.9% hard-hit rate he’s allowed in 18.2 innings which is far worse than the league average.

Darvish is also starting to struggle with control as his walk rate sits at 10% - his highest in years. If Darvish gives up a few extra baserunners, it could be the difference on Sunday. Expect the Dodgers to take care of business in game three.

Over 8.5 (-108)

Los Angeles has seen plenty of Darvish in their careers which should help them at the plate. Betts, Freeman, and Ohtani have all had success against Darvish in the last few years, and that’s not even considering Will Smith and Teoscar Hernandez’s success against the veteran. Plus, San Diego does not have the strongest bullpen, so runs could still be coming late in the game.

The Padres lineup has an excellent track record against Paxton. Between Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jurickson Profar, and Jake Cronenworth, they are 19-for-54 (.352) against the lefty in their careers.

Also, since Paxton doesn’t get many swings and misses, the Padres should be able to put plenty of balls in play. With two very powerful line-ups, runs should come with high regularity throughout the game. Take the over in Los Angeles.
