The first month of the 2025 MLB season has featured plenty of compelling contests, and the action continues on the diamond on Tuesday with an interleague matchup between the San Diego Padres and New York Yankees.
Fresh off a stunning eighth inning comeback to steal the opening game of this series, the Padres have now won six consecutive games and are nipping on the heels of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
On the other side, New York still sits atop the American League East standings at 19-16, but the Yankees have gone just 4-6 over their last 10 games and have lost five out of their last seven games.
Will the Yankees bounce back following Monday’s defeat, or will the Padres pick up a big win on the road? Let’s get into the odds, plus our expert’s betting picks and predictions for this contest.
The Padres are no stranger to winning games this season, and San Diego has certainly not struggled when Michael King has the ball in 2025.
King has picked up right where he left off a season ago, and the right-hander has been dominant regardless of venue this season, to the tune of a 2.09 ERA and just nine earned runs allowed over seven outings.
What’s more impressive are King’s underlying metrics, as he currently holds a 2.92 FIP that ranks inside the top 15 among qualified MLB starters, a .202 opponent expected batting average and a 29.5% strikeout that is currently tied for his career-best mark as a starter.
With the Yankees lineup currently battling through a couple of injuries and not bringing in much experience against King in a live game setting, there isn’t much of a roadblock to stop the Padres starter carving up a lineup that has been pretty unreliable of late, outside of the stellar season New York is getting from Aaron Judge.
Ultimately, the Padres should be able to take the second game of this series and keep the pressure on the Dodgers in the NL West.
This pitching matchup is one that immediately points in the direction of the under, so it was a pleasant surprise that we’re actually getting plus-money on the under 8 (+100) for this contest.
King’s impressive performances have already been talked about, but it’s also worth noting that while Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt has numbers that don't look all that great on paper, his 3.54 xERA, whiff rate and expected batting average metrics show that he's due for a bit of positive regression in the coming outings.
The Padres offense is certainly a dangerous group, but they have shown to be a bit weaker away from home this season. As for New York, the Yankees have tallied three runs or fewer in five of the last seven contests, and this is a lineup with a lot of unreliable bats outside of Judge.
Both starters should do enough to keep the opposition at bay, and with strong outings from two of the better bullpens in the sport predicted, this should aid the handicap of the under at Yankee Stadium.
