San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Game 5: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The Divisional Series has been full of action, but no series has come close to the excitement that has been between the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The NL West divisional foes are tied 2-2 in a best-of-5 series which means the winner of Game 5 will advance to the National League Championship Series.

The setting shifts back to Los Angeles for the series finale and the Padres have already announced that they will start Yu Darvish once again. However, the Dodgers are still weighing up their options and have not announced a starter.

Let’s preview this win-or-go-home matchup with our expert’s best bets.

San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Game 5 betting picks and predictions

Padres ML (+120)

The Padres and Dodgers have gone back-and-forth this series with both teams holding a series lead at some point.

Los Angeles jumped out to a 1-0 lead, only for San Diego to bounce back to take a 2-1 lead, but they failed to clinch the series on home soil in Game 4 and now have to try to warp things up on the road.

The Dodgers have been tabbed as the favorite in Game 5, which isn’t surprising considering they’re at home, but they are yet to announce a starting pitcher. The options are either Yoshinobu Yamamoto on five days of rest or Jack Flaherty on four days of rest.

Normally, Los Angeles would start Yamamoto without much hesitation, but the Japanese sensation was hit hard by the Padres in Game 1 as he allowed five runs, five hits, and two walks in just three innings.

With that said, Flaherty didn’t do much better in Game 2 since he allowed four earned runs and five hits in 5.1 innings.

The Padres opted to use Dylan Cease on just three days of rest in Game 4 and it backfired. The right-hander got hit hard quickly and forced the San Diego bullpen to cover most of the game.

The good news is that the Padres didn’t need to use their high-leverage relievers since the game was out of hand early on. For Game 5, the Padres will turn to Yu Darvish for his second start of the series.

Darvish was the Game 2 starter in L.A. and he was phenomenal, as he threw seven innings and allowed only three hits and one run. It was a no-brainer to start Darvish for this win-or-go-home game and he will have Tanner Scott, Jason Adam, and Robert Suarez to follow him.

The Padres have the pitching advantage no matter if the Dodgers start Yamamoto or Flaherty, and San Diego should have the offensive advantage too. They've had the better lineup this series and Freddie Freeman is still dealing with a pretty severe ankle injury.

Over 8 (-110)

This series has seen 12, 12, 11, and eight runs scored in the four games and, with that in mind, it’s hard to pivot to the under now.

Both bullpens are going to be tired heading into Friday - especially the Dodgers. Los Angeles utilized a bullpen game on Wednesday night which means they used seven different arms to get the win.

The Padres weren’t much better though since Dylan Cease didn’t even complete two innings. San Diego used six relief arms in the losing effort but were able to preserve their three high-leverage arms.

As for starting pitching, there is a lot of confidence in the veteran Darvish. However, don’t expect a scoreless outing from him considering the depth of Los Angeles’ lineup. They were able to get one off of him in Game 2 and should be able to do it again.
