Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The battle for the NL East title continues as the Philadelphia Phillies look to win their series against the Atlanta Braves with a victory tonight.

Yesterday’s series opener had a little bit of everything: home runs, great pitching, and a lot of hits.

In the end, the Phillies were able to walk away with an 8-6 win which is even more impressive when remembering that they are without Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and JT Realmuto.

Up next in the Philadelphia rotation is Ranger Suarez, who is still in contention for the NL Cy Young award. However, Suarez’s last start was his worst of the season as the Marlins tagged him for 6 runs and 10 hits in 4.2 innings.

But prior to that terrible outing, Suarez had allowed 2 earned runs or less in 13 of his last 15 starts. Every pitcher is entitled to a few bad outings in a year, so I’m still high on Suarez.

A slew of injuries in the Braves starting rotation gave Spencer Schwellenbach an opportunity to make his mark. The rookie jumped from Double-A straight to the Majors and has been a solid arm in his few chances.

He has a 5.68 ERA with a 3.90 xERA and owns an above-average strikeout rate, but also an above-average hard-hit rate.

Schwellenbach has allowed 8 runs, 13 hits, and 2 home runs in his last 10 innings against the Pirates and Cardinals, which makes me worried about how he will do against a deep and powerful Phillies lineup.

Since Philadelphia has the pitching advantage and a red-hot offense after yesterday, I’m backing the Phillies at a great price.

Over 8.5 (-110)

The over appears to be the safer side in this game considering the two elite lineups and rookie pitcher on the mound.

Yesterday’s game was expected to be lower scoring since Aaron Nola and Max Fried were the two starters, but both lineups were able to get to the opposing pitcher and combined for a total of 14 runs.

Plus, both teams had to use several high-leverage arms since the game got close in the end, which means those arms could be unavailable for tonight.

But getting back to the first half of the game, the Phillies offense should be able to find some success against Schwellenbach. The rookie throws a lot of fastballs, sliders, and cutters which hasn’t been too effective for him so far.

Opponents are crushing his fastball for a .357 average and his cutter for a .348 average, so he’s had to use his slider a lot more recently. But when he’s down in the count, I’m expecting Schwellenbach to go back to his four-seamer and cutter.

I still have confidence in Suarez to put together a good outing, but his last start was an eye-opener. It was the first time all season that the lefty failed to record a strikeout.

He wasn’t getting the same amount of swings and misses, nor the high amount of ground balls he usually gets, so it is slightly concerning to see that coming into this start, especially since Atlanta has had a lot of success against southpaws.

The Braves have mashed left-handed pitching this year, as they rank in the top 10 in OPS, SLG, and wRC+.

Even though Ronald Acuna Jr. is no longer in the lineup, the Braves still have Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley, Matt Olson, and Marcell Ozuna in the heart of the order.

I’m backing the powerful lineups and taking the over in tonight’s game.
