The Philadelphia Phillies get their weekend series started against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who beat the Phils in last year's National League Championship Series.
It’s safe to say that this game is one that plenty of fans will have their eyes on.
With that in mind, we’ve shared our best Phillies vs. Diamondbacks predictions.
While this is indeed a 2023 NLCS rematch, it’s not the first time that these teams have seen each other since that series. They met back in June, with the Phillies winning two of the three games.
However, Philly has been among the worst teams in baseball since the All-Star break.
Even with that being the case, they still find themselves with one of the best records in the entire league.
Given both teams' hitting ability, rather than sweating out a winner for today’s series opener, the best bet from our Phillies vs. Diamondbacks predictions is focused on the total, or over/under. In that regard, we’re anticipating a high-scoring game.
First and foremost, there was no day of rest for either side, as they’re beginning a long, four-game series. That means taxed bullpens, not to mention the fact that both teams were on the road for their previous series.
They’ll be headed to Arizona for this series and that also trends towards a high-scoring game. The Diamondbacks home ballpark is Chase Field and thanks to the ridiculous summer heat, it’s an indoor stadium.
With no outside weather factors, Chase Field ranks as one of the most hitter-friendly stadiums. In terms of runs produced, it ranks second in all of baseball per Ballpark Pal.
As if all that wasn’t enough, the previous series between these teams also produced plenty of runs. Each of the first two games of the three-game set saw at least nine runs scored, including 13 in the second matchup.
That fact, coupled with fatigued relief arms, is why we’re focusing on taking Over 9.5 runs.
The Phillies' series finale against the Dodgers was all about Kyle Schwarber’s massive performance.
The lefty leadoff man went 4-for-4 with three home runs, which is all but unheard of. So, while backing him at the plate has been fantastic the past two games, we have a different approach.
Instead, we’re going to be focused on the player immediately following him in the lineup - Trea Turner.
The Diamondbacks will be starting Jordan Montgomery for this series opener, who is a southpaw. That’s great news for several Philly hitters who are better against lefties, but we’re eyeing Turner.
He just got done facing his former team and the All-Star shortstop is coming off a two-hit night himself. Furthermore, he’s been great against lefties this season, hitting .313 against them.
Better yet, his career average versus lefties is the exact same .313 mark and that comes along with a .525 slugging percentage and .907 OPS.
Those are key statistical categories when focusing on total bases. To wrap it all up Turner hit well against Arizona earlier this season with a .308 average in their previous series.
That included a home run, so we could hit our Phillies vs. Diamondbacks player prop in just a single swing.
