MLB No. 1 prospect Roman Anthony called up by Boston Red Sox

Baseball's top prospect is finally heading to the Show.

The Boston Red Sox called up outfielder Roman Anthony on June 9, and he's already a contender for the American League Rookie of the Year Award before even facing a pitch in Major League Baseball.

Anthony is +2000 to win the award, putting him third in the betting behind Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson (-550) and another new call-up, Kansas City Royals first baseman/designated hitter Jac Caglianone (+1400).

Anthony, who turned 21 in May, played 58 games at AAA this season before the call-up. With the Worcester Red Sox, he hit .288/.423/.491 with 10 home runs, 29 RBI, nine doubles, two triples, and 51 walks to 56 strikeouts.

The 2022 second-round pick spent most of his time in leftfield, playing 29 of his 58 games there this season. He also was the designated hitter in 14 games, played centerfield in 11 games, and played rightfield in four.

Just two days before his call-up, he cranked a home run 497 feet.

Anthony is likely to rotate with Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu in the Sox outfield, which should ease him into life in MLB. His Minor League teammates and fellow hyped prospects, infielders Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell, haven't had that privilege due to the number of injuries to other Boston infielders.

The Red Sox face the Tampa Bay Rays this week, and while he was not included in the starting lineup for Monday's game, he's likely to make his professional debut against his team's AL East rivals.
