Two of the most talented, dangerous, and balanced teams in MLB continue their series as the Philadelphia Phillies host the New York Yankees.
The Yankees and Phillies played out a classic to open the series and more of the same could be on the agenda as the Phillies look to get back in the win column.
The Yankees and Phillies kicked off the three-game set with a bang as New York outslugged Philadelphia 14-4 and both teams launched home runs deep into the stands.
Considering Luis Gil and Zack Wheeler were starting, it was slightly surprising to see such a high score, but it shouldn't come as a shock if this game reaches double-digits. That's because Tuesday's probable pitchers are Gerrit Cole and Aaron Nola.
Cole has not looked like the same pitcher since coming off the injured list this year. After being shut down due to elbow pain in Spring Training, he opted for rest and rehab instead of surgery. The ace missed the first three months of the season, but he's now completed seven starts since rejoining the rotation.
But in those outings, Cole has a 5.40 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP, and his lowest strikeout rate since 2017. He was shelled for six runs, eight hits, and three home runs in his last start against the Mets, too.
Nola has put together a very strong season with a 3.44 ERA and a 3.40 xERA in 21 starts. There has been so much pressure him to be the perfect sidekick to Zack Wheeler in the last few years, but that's not the case in 2024.
Philadelphia has one of the strongest and deepest rotations in all of baseball, and it has allowed Nola to pitch with more freedom. Plus, he's had a lot of success against the Yankees lineup in his career.
If Nola can live on the corners against Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, he should have confidence against the rest of the New York lineup which in turn could lead to a successful outing.
The ball was flying off the bat on Monday at Citizens Bank Park. The humid air and wind blowing towards center field created perfect hitting conditions, and both lineups took advantage as there were seven combined home runs last night.
Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. both hit two homers while Ben Rice, Anthony Volpe, and Brandon Marsh added another each.
Fortunately for the hitters, the weather will be very similar on Tuesday. It's going to be mid 80's with 12 MPH winds blowing out which once again gives them the advantage. Plus, the generous conditions mixed with a strong Phillies lineup should equal a lot of runs against Cole.
The New York ace has given up nine home runs in just seven outings and his barrel rate has surged to above 10% for the first time in his career. If he continues to throw mid 90's fastballs to a lineup that demolishes four-seamers, it could be another game with plenty of fireworks from the hitters.
The New York lineup hit an incredible six home runs on Monday.
During the first half of the season, the talk of the team was that Soto and Judge needed more help. The Yankees went out and made a trade for Chisholm Jr., and he made an immediate impact with two homers. Plus, Rice has been an excellent upgrade from Anthony Rizzo at first base.
The lineup is much more balanced with Chisholm in the heart of the order, and the offensive rampage could continue on Tuesday night but the home side can get revenge. As long as the rain holds off, this score could be something along the lines of 8-6 in favor of the Phillies.
