The New York Yankees lead the Cleveland Guardians 2-1 in the ALCS, but a dramatic Cleveland win in Game 3 cut the Yankees' series lead in half.
Game 3 was one of the most exciting games of the year, with the back-and-forth fight ended by a David Fry walk-off home run to clinch Cleveland’s first win of the ALCS.
The Guardians find themselves as home underdogs for the second straight game on Friday night as Cleveland's Gavin Williams will counter the Yankees' Luis Gil. Can the Guardians keep the momentum going? Or was last night just a lucky win?
Let’s preview this pivotal Game 4 of the ALCS and see our expert’s best bets.
Thursday night's game might have been the best game of the entire season. The Guardians took a 3-1 lead into the eighth inning and brought in Emmanuel Clase for a four-out save and, usually, that meant the Guardians would win the game.
However, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton went back-to-back off of the best closer in baseball to take a 4-3 lead. The Yankees tacked on another run in the ninth to take a two-run lead and all hope appeared to be lost for Cleveland until Jhonkensy Noel hit a game-tying 2-run home run with 2 outs to tie the game.
Fast forward to the bottom of the 10th and David Fry continued his hot streak at the plate with a walk-off two-run home run to win the game for the Guardians. Momentum certainly seems to be on Cleveland’s side, but will it continue tonight with Gavin Williams on the mound?
Williams was an important part of Cleveland’s regular season rotation as he posted a 4.86 ERA and a 4.14 xERA in 16 starts, but he has yet to appear in the postseason. His last start came on September 22 - nearly a month ago.
The Yankees are putting Luis Gil in a very similar situation. The right-hander has not appeared in the postseason yet and his last outing was on September 28.
On any other team, Gil would certainly be an important part of the postseason rotation. However, the Yankees have a plethora of starting pitchers and he got pushed out - until now.
Here’s the problem with Gil: he didn’t look like the same pitcher in the second half of the season. Between August and September, Gil allowed 33 hits, 19 runs, and 24 walks in 39 innings. His control was spotty and his fastball didn’t have the same life that it did prior to the All-Star break.
Plus, he allowed three runs, three hits, a home run, and six walks in 3.0 innings in his only start against the Guardians in August. Ride with the Guardians and take them at plus odds in Game 4.
The Guardians have been the perfect team for the Under in the postseason. That’s because the Guardians have struggled to hit with runners in scoring position and they have the best bullpen in baseball.
Stephen Vogt also manages every game like an elimination game which means he’s not afraid to pull his starter early and empty his bullpen. That has led to a lot of low scoring games in the postseason, even though two of the three games in the ALCS have gone Over.
With that said, last night’s game was 3-1 heading into the eighth inning with Emmanuel Clase coming in, so the game was expected to finish Under the 7.5 total too, but little did we know the excitement that was about to unfold.
The most important part of this game is the two starting pitchers. Neither arm has pitched in the postseason which means Gil and Williams are very well rested and, from their teams' perspectives, hopefully not too rusty.
If either arm shows any signs of problems, it won’t be long before Aaron Boone or Vogt will go to the bullpen.
I’ve been backing the Under in most Guardians postseason games and I won’t stop tonight, so take Under 7.5 runs in tonight’s Game 4 in Cleveland.
