New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The New York Mets will be hoping to halt a seven-game losing streak when they visit the National League East rival Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night.

No, that is not a misprint; one of the best teams in baseball – at least according to the standings – has lost seven times in a row.

That horror run has seen a change atop the division, with Philadelphia now in front by a game. The Phillies have won three straight and eight of their last nine heading into this middle frame of a three-game series.

With Saturday’s contest set for 7:15 pm ET on FOX, it’s time to break down the matchup and discuss the best bets to make.

New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies betting picks and predictions

Philadelphia Phillies ML (-115)

In no way, shape or form can you feel good about backing the Mets right now. A stretch of seven games is not a small sample size; no team can fluke its way to seven consecutive losses. New York is simply playing bad baseball at the moment.

With Philadelphia on fire, there is no reason to think that trend of opposite extremes will suddenly come to an end at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday.

What’s particularly amazing is that the Mets have not even been competitive for the most part. Six of their seven losses during this skid have come by multiple runs, the only exception being a 5-4 extra-inning heartbreaker at Atlanta in which they squandered a 4-1 lead with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

New York were outscored 12-1 in the last two game of it's previous series and then got clobbered by Philadelphia 10-2 on Friday.

The Phillies, on the other hand, are swinging hot bats. They have scored at least seven runs four times during their current 8-1 stretch, including double-digits on two occasions. Alec Bohm is on a six-game hitting streak, has delivered three multi-hit efforts in those six and has produced five multi-hit performances in the last 11 contests.

Philadelphia has great value as a slight favorite at home on Saturday.

Under 9.5 (+100)

On the bright side for New York, the margins should at least be a lot smaller in this contest than they were on Friday because Mick Abel of the Phillies vs. Griffin Canning of the Mets projects to be a nice pitching matchup.

Four appearances into his MLB career, Abel is 2-0 with a 2.21 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and a 17-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 20.1 innings. Canning is 6-3 with a 3.80 ERA so far this season. The 29-year-old righty faced Philly on April 22 and fired 5.0 innings of one-run baseball.

New York will almost certainly need another stellar showing by Canning in order to be competitive on Saturday, as the bats are scuffling. The Mets have been shut out twice in their last five games and have scored a total of three runs in their past two contests. They haven’t crossed the plate more than four times since June 13.

All things considered, the under looks like the play to make.

Bryson Stott Over 1.5 hits + runs + RBIs (-105)

Bryson Stott Over 1.5 Hits, Runs and RBIs (-105)

Bryson Stott comes into this one on a three-game hitting streak, going 5-for-8 overall during this stretch. The Phillies’ second baseman has delivered three, one and three RBIs over the past three contests. He is seeing the ball big right now and in a potent lineup he often finds himself at the plate with men on base and then on base, himself, with dangerous hitters coming up behind him.

It’s a perfect recipe to record RBIs and score runs. Although no one on Philadelphia’s roster has a ton of a familiarity with Canning, Stott is off to an encouraging 2-for-5 start in that head-to-head matchup.
