One of the most exciting games from the first day of the 2024 MLB Postseason was between the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers which featured 12 runs on 15 hits and a Mets win.
It felt like the only game with offense, but is that going to change in Game 2?
Let’s preview this Wild Card matchup between the Mets and Brewers and get into our expert’s best bets.
The Mets have all the momentum at the moment. New York surged into the postseason conversation during September and a win over the Braves on Monday solidified their spot in October.
The Mets continued their momentum last night with an 8-4 win over the Brewers in Milwaukee. Luis Severino was brilliant on the mound and he was followed by Jose Butto and Ryne Stanek, who combined to not allow a hit in three innings.
The multi-run win was huge for the Mets since they didn’t need to use their high-leverage relievers.
The double header on Monday depleted the Mets bullpen and they desperately needed a solid outing from Severino to have a shot in the series.
Severino delivered and now they have Sean Manaea starting, followed by Reed Garrett, Phil Maton, and Edwin Diaz in the 'pen.
In a must-win game, the Brewers are turning to Frankie Montas. The right-hander had a 5.01 ERA in 19 starts for the Reds and was traded to the Brewers ahead of the deadline.
Milwaukee was in desperate need of veteran starting pitching, but trading for Montas raised some questions since he wasn’t exactly dominating in Cincinnati.
Montas appeared in 11 starts for the Brewers in the second half of the season and he accumulated a 4.55 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.
The veteran had moments of brilliance, but also concern. Most notably, his final three starts of the regular season weren’t too good.
Montas allowed 13 runs, 14 hits, and 6 home runs in 12.1 innings to the Phillies, Diamondbacks, and Mets combined.
New York has been dominant against right-handed pitching lately and they can advance to the Divisional Series with a win.
Yesterday’s game between these two teams was the only game that went Over the Total. In reality, it was the only game that had any sort of action at the plate.
The Mets exploded for eight runs behind the bats of Mark Vientos, Jesse Winker, and J.D. Martinez.
Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso didn’t do much in the win, but that’s an even better sign for New York, since they still won without their stars having much of an impact.
Fortunately for the Mets, their entire lineup has great numbers against Montas.
Between Lindor, Alonso, Vientos, Martinez, Winker, Jose Iglesias, and Starling Marte, they are a combined 17-for-54 (.315) against Montas in their careers.
That provides confidence that it won’t be just one guy carrying the offense tonight, but instead, the entire lineup feasting.
It might be hard to believe considering they lost by four runs, but the Brewers actually out-hit the Mets yesterday. The problem was that it was mostly singles and they couldn’t string hits together.
However, there is good news for the Brew Crew today. First, they are facing Sean Manaea.
Manaea’s final start of the regular season was against the Brewers in Milwaukee less than a week ago and the Brewers shelled him for six runs, seven hits, and one home run in just 3.2 innings.
Secondly, that wasn’t the only time that the Brewers have hit Manaea in their careers.
The Milwaukee lineup has a .326 batting average with a .453 xSLG in 51 career plate appearances against Manaea.
Both lineups have solid numbers against the opposing pitcher, so both offenses in Game 2 can help go Over this very low Total.
