It’s a National League showdown in Arizona on Saturday night as the Brewers and Diamondbacks continue their three-game set.
Although the regular season ends in just a few weeks, both of these teams will almost certainly be playing baseball in October as part of the postseason. However, that doesn’t mean these last few games don’t hold significance.
Tonight’s probable pitchers are Tobias Myers for the Brewers and Brandon Pfaadt for the Diamondbacks, so let’s preview this matchup and get into the best bets from out expert to lock in before first pitch.
It’s been a disappointing second half of the season for Brandon Pfaadt. Last season at this time, the rookie turned from being a backend starter to a key piece of Arizona’s postseason rotation. However, Pfaadt hasn’t shown that sign of improvement in the second half yet.
He posted a 6.04 ERA with a 1.45 WHIP in five starts in August and currently owns a 6.10 ERA and 1.94 WHIP through two starts this month. The most worrisome part of his game recently has been his control. In the first half, Pfaadt was great at locating his fastball on the corners and then getting hitters to chase his sweeper.
But lately, he’s leaving way too many pitches over the middle of the plate. He’s surrendered eight or more hits in his last five consecutive starts, but it gets even worse when you dig into the stats and see that hitters have a .347 batting average and .299 xBA against him in that span. Plus, he’s allowed a home run in five of his last six outings.
Tobias Myers has been an unsung hero in the Brewers rotation this season. He’s made 22 starts and has a 2.92 ERA with a 1.16 WHIP in his first big league season. Myers is the exact pitcher that every manager would love to have in their rotation: high strikeout rate, low walk rate, and the ability to go deep into games.
He’s also been fantastic down the stretch with a 2.63 ERA and a .246 batting average allowed since the All-Star break. Considering he’s surrendered three runs or less in 10 straight starts, we have a good idea as to what to expect from Myers each time he takes the mound.
Myers has been better than Pfaadt in the last few weeks which I think will give Milwaukee the advantage they need to win tonight.
Both lineups were held in check Friday night as Freddy Peralta and Eduardo Rodriguez worked around a lot of traffic on the bases. If the Brewers and Diamondbacks can continue to put runners on base, I’m expecting their situational hitting to be better after their dismal performance at the plate yesterday.
Plus, Pfaadt has been susceptible to the big hits or extra base hits in his last few outings. His fastball has been getting hit more than ever and hitters have a near .300 xBA against that pitch.
This will be the second time that Pfaadt has faced the Brewers in his career as his first appearance came in the Wild Card round of last year’s postseason. Although it’s a small sample size, the Brewers lineup has a .308 average against Pfaadt.
Aside from last night, the Diamondbacks have crushed right-handed pitching lately. The Snakes rank fourth in batting average, second in on-base percentage, first in OPS, and second in wRC+ against right-handers in September.
Arizona has had one of the most efficient offenses in the second half of the season and I’m not anticipating for their lineup to be held down for a second straight game - especially at home.
Milwaukee used multiple high-leverage relievers last night in order to get the win, so we could see some less reliable arms in relief tonight. That should only help the hitters and the chance for this game to go over the total.
