The Los Angeles Dodgers will be hoping to extend their winning streak to five games when they visit the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.
Los Angeles swept the Pittsburgh Pirates and then took the series opener from Milwaukee 5-2 on Monday as superstar Mookie Betts returned from injury.
The Brewers had been on a five-game surge of their own last week but have since dropped two in a row.
Let’s take a look at the odds and best bets to make for Tuesday’s contest.
The Dodgers should be set up well to continue their winning ways on Tuesday. Although their pitching rotation is kind of in shambles at the moment because of injuries, tonight's starter Gavin Stone has been a reliable performer.
The right-hander is 9-5 with a 3.71 ERA through 116.1 innings of work. He now runs into a Milwaukee club that has crossed the plate only six times in its last three outings.
Stone will likely get enough run support in this one, even though Los Angeles is facing a formidable opposing pitcher in Colin Rea.
Both Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts went deep on Monday and Betts finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. The right fielder has hit safely in 10 of the last 11 contests. Both Ohtani and Teoscar Hernandez have homered seven times since the All-Star Break and Hernandez is hitting .318 during this stretch.
The Dodgers hit a brief snag in late July and early August, but they are back in business now. Both Stone and the bats should help them keep it going.
This matchup is likely to be a low-scoring affair decided by relatively small margins.
As consistent as Stone has been in 2024, Rea has performed even better. The righty is 10-3 with a 3.38 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 122.1 innings. He most recently befuddled the Atlanta Braves last Tuesday, firing seven innings of shutout baseball with nine strikeouts and just one walk while scattering a modest five hits.
Over his last four starts, Rea has surrendered a mere four runs in 23.0 innings. It’s hard to see either offense doing a ton of damage on Monday.
Rea has allowed more than two earned runs just twice in his last 13 starts. Stone may not be quite as good of a pitcher, but at the same time he is encountering a less potent offense.
The Brewers’ bats have cooled off the last three games and outfielder Christian Yelich, who has been sidelined since July 24, is out for the foreseeable future due to a back injury. The under looks like the way to play Tuesday’s intriguing pitching matchup.
Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman missed more than a week in late July and early August for personal reasons. The first baseman is back now and has been decent enough since his return.
He is 7-for-27 (.259) this month with a homer, three doubles, four RBIs and four runs scored. Facing a right-handed pitcher on Tuesday is obviously good news for Freeman, who is batting .309 against righties this season compared to .241 against southpaws.
Hitting right after Ohtani and Betts and just ahead of Hernandez in a potent Los Angeles lineup, Freeman should be able to put up some big numbers at the expense of Rea and Milwaukee.
