The MLB week continues with a full 15-game slate on Tuesday, headlined by a showdown between the National League West rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres at Petco Park in San Diego.
Monday’s opener of this three-game series certainly set an entertaining tone, as LA prevailed 8-7 in 10 innings. That gives the Dodgers (40-27) a 1.5-game lead in the division over the San Francisco Giants and a two-game cushion over the Padres (37-28).
With Tuesday’s contest set for 9:40 PM ET, it’s time to break down the matchup and discuss the best bets to make.
Monday’s loss was a heartbreaker for the Padres, who had a chance to tie their arch rivals atop the NL West. Fortunately for manager Mike Shildt’s club, it should be in a prime spot to bounce back.
San Diego is 20-11 at home, and aside from getting swept by Tampa Bay and Seattle, it has not lost back-to-back games at Petco Park this entire season. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are a modest 17-16 at home compared to 23-11 at home.
Moreover, Tuesday’s pitching situation favors San Diego. That has more to do with the Dodgers than it does with the Padres.
Now that Tony Gonsolin has joined several other members of LA’s rotation on the injured list, the visitors are expected to either utilize a bullpen day or call someone up from the minors. Either way, it looks like they'll have a lot of relievers toeing the rubber.
That is not good news for the Dodgers, who own a modest 3.88 bullpen ERA in 2025 and just used four different bullpen arms all in high-leverage spots on Monday, including Anthony Banda for 2.0 innings.
San Diego’s Dylan Cease has been far from great this season, but he has allowed more than three runs in a start only once. The right-hander should get some run support on Tuesday after the top five guys in the Padres’ lineup (Fernando Tatis Jr., Luis Arraez, Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill and Gavin Sheets) all had at least one hit in the series opener.
As mentioned, San Diego should be able to cross the plate plenty of times on Tuesday, given the pitching problems the Dodgers have coming into this contest.
The Padres probably need to score a lot of runs in this contest, because the Dodgers match up quite well with Cease. Shohei Ohtani is 6-for-19 lifetime against Cease with three home runs and a double; Freddie Freeman is 5-for-11 with a double; Mookie Betts is 3-for-11 with a homer, and Kiké Hernandez is 6-for-13 with a dinger and two doubles.
All things considered, the over looks like a great play.
Freeman has seen the ball very well against Cease in the past and there is no reason to think anything will change.
So far this season, he is batting .377 against right-handers with seven home runs, 34 RBIs and 28 runs scored.
Freeman opened this series by going 3-for-5 with a double, one RBI and two runs, so he heads into Tuesday’s contest full of confidence.
With Ohtani and Betts having also enjoyed a lot of success against Cease, Freeman figures to arrive at the plate with men on base to be set up nicely for RBI opportunities.
