It’s a battle between the National League elite in Philadelphia tonight as the Dodgers take on the Phillies for the start of a three-game series.
Let's get into our betting picks and predictions for Tuesday night's game.
It’s been a fantastic first half of the season for both teams and each squad is sending plenty of players to the All-Star Game next week. But back to tonight, it will be Bobby Miller on the mound for the Dodgers and Zack Wheeler taking the hill for the Phillies.
There is an immediate advantage for one team based on the pitching matchup. Miller was supposed to play a key role in the Dodgers rotation this season since Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler were both going to be out to start the year, but Miller made only three starts before suffering from shoulder inflammation and was shut down for nearly three months.
Fortunately for the Dodgers, he returned to the rotation a few weeks ago and has made three starts thus far. The bad news is he hasn’t looked like the same ace we’ve been accustomed to. He’s allowed 10 runs, 14 hits, three home runs, and nine walks in 13.1 innings. Those starts were against the Rockies, White Sox, and Diamondbacks, so he might be in for a rude awakening tonight.
Zack Wheeler starting at home might be the greatest cheat code in all of sports. The Philadelphia ace has been phenomenal once again this season with a 2.74 ERA and 2.97 xERA, and there are plenty of other advanced metrics indicating Wheeler has only gotten better with age.
But perhaps the most important stat about Wheeler is his home and away splits. In 10 starts at home, Wheeler is 6-2 with a 1.76 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, and a .175 batting average allowed. Plus, in his last seven starts at home, his ERA drops to 1.43. He’s an elite arm that thrives on pitching at home, so back the Phillies to give Wheeler another win at home.
Based on this under total, the oddsmakers expect for Miller to get roughed up and Wheeler to allow roughly two or three runs.
That’s a pretty solid estimation because there will be hitter-friendly conditions at Citizens Bank Park this evening. However, it seems a tad bit high. The under has hit in four of Wheeler’s last six starts at home and in 11 of Philadelphia’s last 15 home games.
A big reason for that is the lack of stars in the Philadelphia lineup. Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and JT Realmuto have been out for a few weeks with injuries and that has led to a decrease in runs from the Phillies offense.
That’s not much of a surprise, but the good news for Philadelphia is that Schwarber is expected to be activated for tonight’s game while Harper is a 50/50 shot to suit up. Even if both stars play, it’s hard to expect them to jump right back into the hot streak they were having at the plate. No rehab assignments makes coming back to the plate a little bit more challenging.
Speaking of stars missing from lineups, the Dodgers are still without Mookie Betts. He won’t return for another few weeks which has put a lot of pressure onto Shohei Ohtani, Will Smith, and Freddie Freeman.
All three of those hitters have stepped up during his absence, but the problem is the bottom half of the Dodgers order.
In their series finale against the Brewers, the bottom five hitters in the L.A. lineup combined to go 3-for-18 and having Enrique Hernandez and Chris Taylor at the bottom of the lineup struggling to hit .200 is a tough look for the Dodgers.
The entire lineup may well struggle against Wheeler since he’s been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball this season, so as long as the Phillies don’t hit the over themselves, the under is the best bet in this game.
