MLB London Series: Dates, teams, schedule & history

The MLB London Series returns for its second iteration at the London Stadium this June, with the NL West rival Chicago Cubs and St Louis Cardinals facing off.

The MLB is coming the U.K. for a second-straight year to put on for baseball fans across the pond, with two of its most historic franchises competing over two-game series.

Who is playing the MLB London Series?

The 2023 MLB London Series will be between the St Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs, and St Louis are officially the home team. 

The rivalry between the two is known as the Route 66 rivalry and they both compete in the NL Central. 

The Cardinals won the NL Central last season with a 93-69 record, while the Cubs finished third with a record of 74-88 before St Louis were beaten 2-0 by the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL Wild Card game. 

The Cardinals have won 11 World Series, the most recent of which came in 2011, while the Cubs got their third World Series title in 2016, breaking a run of over 100 years without winning baseball’s biggest prize.

When is the MLB London Series?

The 2023 edition of the MLB London Series is due to take place on Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25.

Where is the MLB London Series?

The MLB London Series will take place at the London Stadium, which is Premier League football team West Ham’s home ground. 

The stadium was also the host for the 2012 London Olympics and has staged both codes of rugby, motorsports and concerts in the past. 

The stadium has to undergo considerable alterations for the MLB London Series, including seating adjustments, larger locker rooms and the installation of a new playing surface with a custom-built mound. 

The dimensions of the London Stadium are 330 feet (100.6 metres) to the foul poles and 385 feet (117.4 metres) to centre field. 

These are hitter friendly and should allow for plenty of big hitting. The capacity of the stadium for baseball games is 66,000 which is higher than it is for football but lower than it is for concerts, which is 80,000.

Can I watch the MLB London Series?

The MLB London Series will be available to watch on FOX and ESPN. FOX will carry Saturday's game, while ESPN will have Sunday's game.

How many times has the MLB London Series taken place?

The MLB London Series has taken place just once before, with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox facing off in 2019. 

The two games were high-scoring affairs, with 30 runs in the first game and 20 in the second. 

The first matchup was the second-most runs scored ever in a game between those two teams. 

MLB has signed a deal with the Mayor of London and London Stadium to return for London Series games in 2024 and 2026. 

Who has won the MLB London Series on the most occasions?

The New York Yankees won both games when they faced the Boston Red Sox in the first-ever MLB London Series in 2019. 

Six runs for each team in the first inning started a wild first game that saw six home runs, with the Yankees running out 17-13 winners. 

Boston had three first inning home runs but failed to capitalise on that, giving up nine runs in the seventh to trail 11-4. The Red Sox rallied somewhat but New York still ran out 12-8 winners.
