Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The Houston Astros take on the New York Yankees in a three-game series with the first game at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night.

On the mound in the opener will be Justin Verlander for the Astros and Luis Gil for the Yankees which indicates a strong pitching matchup.

Verlander has made three starts since coming off the injured list and has a 2.08 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP in 17.1 innings. However, the problem likely won’t be Verlander - it will be Houston’s lineup.

Gil has been a pleasant surprise in the New York rotation so far. In six starts, Gil owns a 3.19 ERA and 30.8% strikeout rate. He’s been the perfect replacement for Gerrit Cole, who is likely out for the next month or so.

The Yankees have opened as slight favorites for tonight’s series opener.

Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees betting picks and predictions

Yankees ML (-120)

The Astros have been the biggest disappointment in baseball this season. Coming into tonight’s game, the Astros are 12-22 and are struggling to find any sort of rhythm.

Houston’s pitching hasn’t been to their normal standard as Hunter Brown and Framber Valdez both had a difficult April while their lineup has been uncharacteristically cold in the first few weeks. Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez have been great at the top, but Alex Bregman and Jose Abreu have been terrible in the middle of the order.

Tonight is not expected to be the night the Houston offense snaps out of it since Gil has looked fantastic. Between Gil’s high-velocity fastball and wipeout slider, hitters have had a hard time seeing the ball.

The right-hander is getting a lot of swings and misses as he ranks in the 81st percentile in whiff rate and also gets a lot of weak contact since just 27% of balls in play are considered hard-hit.

With a strong lineup behind him, the Yankees are in a great position to start the series with a win. At near even odds, the Yankees are the pick.

Under 8.5 (-105)

Low-scoring games have been common for Gil this season. Two of his last three outings have gone under the total with an average of just 7.33 runs in those games. Plus, Gil is backed by a New York bullpen that has a 0.63 ERA in the last 14 days.

The Yankees bullpen was expected to be a strength of the team, but they have exceeded even those expectations as they are one of the best groups of arms in baseball. Perhaps the best news of all is that the Yankees had a day off yesterday which means every arm in the New York bullpen should be fresh and available for tonight.

Although the sample size is small on Verlander, he has looked healthy and back to normal this season. In his three starts, the games have averaged just 5.67 runs which is several runs below tonight’s total.

Also, Verlander has seemed to enjoy the spotlight at Yankee Stadium. The ace has a career 3.39 ERA in the Bronx and has limited hitters to just a .224 batting average in those starts.

With two high-quality starters on the mound tonight, runs should be limited.
