Believe it not, a 2024 World Series matchup between the Cleveland Guardians and Philadelphia Phillies is far from out of the question. In fact, they have two of the best records in all of baseball, so it’s arguably one of the most likely.
The two teams continue their weekend series on Saturday night, so we’ve shared our best Guardians vs. Phillies predictions for fans to take advantage of.
The Guardians are coming off a long four-game series against an AL Central rival in the Detroit Tigers, which included more close games than expected. The Phillies also just took on an AL Central opponent in the Minnesota Twins, losing two of the three games.
Philadelphia was able to come into this series coming off a rest day, but now in the middle of the series and not having one of their elite arms on the mound, we are expecting plenty of runs this evening. They’ve been carried by Zack Wheeler and Ranger Suarez so far this season, as they’re both among the top NL Cy Young candidates.
However, neither are set to take the mound on Saturday, as it’s going to be Tyler Phillips instead. If that’s an unfamiliar name, that is more than understandable, as he’s had just three outings due to an elbow injury. Admittedly, his most recent start was a solid one, but he’s clearly not in midseason form.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the Phillies lineup has also produced 17 runs in his last two starts.
They should be able to do more of the same with the Guardians sending Carlos Carrasco to the mound. The former New York Met is coming off one of his worst starts of the year, allowing six runs to the Tigers on Monday.
The Phillies remain a top-five scoring team after becoming the fourth team to surpass 500 runs on the year, so Carrasco’s outlook doesn’t look promising.
The Guardians may not have quite that same type of power, but with Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan leading the lineup, they still have more than enough to help produce a high-scoring game.
Given that we’re expecting a high-scoring game, it should come as no surprise that we’re targeting a hitter with our best Guardians vs. Phillies player prop. We’re also not going outside the box when it comes to the player we’re targeting, as we’re going with superstar Bryce Harper.
There was consideration for Alec Bohm (-105) for the same reasons that we’ll provide for Harper, but years of consistency are just too difficult to ignore in comparison to Bohm’s hot season this year.
First and foremost, both hitters have been great against Carrasco, as they’re used to facing him given that he was pitching in the NL East for the Mets.
However, Harper’s success involves double the sample size, and it’s to the tune of a .400 average and slugging percentage, along with a .900 OPS. Not only has he been successful against today’s starter, but he’s been great overall this season.
Harper leading the Phillies in total bases isn’t a shock, but he’s done so while missing 15 games this season!
With that in mind, this is our favorite way to add to our primary Guardians vs. Phillies prediction with a player prop.
