The Cleveland Guardians and Milwaukee Brewers continue their three-game set on Saturday with a 7:15 PM EST first pitch in Milwaukee.
The Brew Crew was able to secure the win in the series opener behind an excellent outing from Aaron Civale, and next up will be Freddy Peralta. The Guardians will counter with Tanner Bibee, so let’s preview this matchup and see our expert’s best bets.
The Brewers used to have one of the best pitching rotations in baseball. It was a three-headed monster made up of Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, and Freddy Peralta, and it was dominant.
However, Burnes was shipped to Baltimore in the offseason and Woodruff is sidelined with an injury, so it’s just been Peralta this year. And when Milwaukee needed him most, he’s had a down year.
It’s not a terrible year by any means, but it’s been his worst for a while.
Peralta enters this start with a 4.11 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 24 starts. It’s his worst ERA and WHIP since 2019 when he was mainly used out of the bullpen. In his four years of being a starter, he has the highest barrel rate, hard-hit rate, sweet-spot rate, xBA, and xERA of his career in 2024.
Plus, Peralta is 1-2 with a 4.13 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in five starts since the All-Star break. It appears to be a mediocre season for the face of the rotation.
Cleveland has plenty of young talent in their rotation with Tanner Bibee at the top of that list. Bibee made his debut last season and remained a vital part of the rotation all year as he made 25 starts and posted a 10-4 record with a 2.98 ERA. He was extremely impressive in 2023, and he’s been solid once again in 2024.
He comes into this start with a 3.39 ERA, which ranks 12th in the American League, and a 1.09 WHIP in 23 starts. And since the All-Star break, Bibee has been lights out. He’s 3-0 with 1.61 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in four 4 starts against the Padres, Twins, and Tigers twice. It’s also important to note that he’s backed by the best bullpen in baseball, so that’s a major advantage for Cleveland.
At better than even odds, the Guardians are the pick in this game.
It’s a low total, but it still might not be low enough. Bibee has been spectacular in the second half of the season with a sub-2 ERA and has limited hitters to a stunning .210 batting average with just a 5% walk rate.
In addition to that, Bibee has pitched better on the road than at home this season. His ERA drops to 2.88 and his WHIP decreases to 1.06 when he pitches at any park besides Progressive Field. That should also benefit the under since tonight’s game takes place in Milwaukee.
And finally, this will be his first time facing the Brewers offense this season. The unfamiliarity will benefit Bibee since the hitters have only seen Bibee once in their careers, and it came in June of 2023.
As mentioned before, Peralta isn’t having his best season. However, he’s still an above average pitcher that has a solid bullpen behind him. Peralta will likely go five or six innings before handing the responsibility over to the bullpen, and the two arm barns are going to be the reason this game stays low scoring.
Cleveland has a phenomenal bullpen with Hunter Gaddis and Emmanual Clase as the lockdown guys at the end of the game and the Brewers just got Devin Williams back from injury to round out a very good bullpen.
As long as neither pitcher gets knocked around in the first few innings, this game has a great chance of staying below the total.
