Chicago Cubs vs. Boston Red Sox: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

ESPN Sunday Night Baseball this week features the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox, who will square off at Fenway Park in Boston. It’s the proverbial deciding rubber match of a three-game series after the two historic franchises traded blowouts in the first two contests.

The Cubs opened with a 7-1 rout on Friday before Saturday’s game turned into a laugher, with the Red Sox rolling out 17-0 winners.

With Sunday’s showdown set for 19:00 ET, it’s time to break down the betting odds and make our best bets.

Chicago Cubs vs. Boston Red Sox betting picks and predictions

Boston Red Sox ML (-135)

The pitching matchup on Sunday night certainly favors Boston.

Taking the mound for the home team is Tanner Houck, who has been outstanding in the early stages of this season. Houck is 3-2 while sporting a 1.65 ERA and 0.98 WHIP through five starts. The right-hander has worked at least 6.0 innings on four occasions and in three of those instances he has not allowed a single run.

It is a different story for the Cubs, who are countering with a bullpen day that will begin with Hayden Wesneski toeing the rubber. Wesneski has made two appearances in 2024, throwing 43 pitches in one and 20 in the other. The right-hander has not surrendered a single run, but overall a string of relievers coming out to face Boston does bode well for Chicago.

On Saturday the Cubs used two relievers for 3.1 innings before handing things over to position players, at which point the game really got out of hand.

Chicago’s bullpen may not be overly taxed, but as a unit it is near the bottom of Major League Baseball with a 4.23 ERA so far this year.

The Red Sox have crossed the plate 134 times this season and should be in line for another productive day at the office.

Over 9.0 runs (120)

This is not a big number for two clubs that are potent at the plate. Chicago have scored 140 runs in 2024 and had put up 21 in the span of four games prior to Saturday’s aberration.

As good as Houck has looked so far this season, he has been hittable at home. His Fenway Park ERA is 2.45 compared to 1.00 on the road. Opponents are hitting .254 against him at home compared to .188 on the road.

For the Cubs, Nico Hoerner has 20 hits in the last 12 games. On Boston’s side, Wilyer Abreu is batting .435 with a home run and six RBIs in the past week.

Even an average day at the office for each team should be enough to take this game over the total.

Dansby Swanson Over 1.5 hits + runs + RBIs (-115)

The sample size against Houck for everyone on the Cubs is obviously small since this is a National League vs. American League matchup. Still, having already hit a home run off Houck in just two lifetime plate appearances should give Swanson some confidence.

Chicago’s shortstop should be feeling good about his bat in general, too, as he is starting to show signs of life this year following a slow start.

Prior to going 0-for-3 on Saturday, Swanson had hit safely in four consecutive contests. Dating back to April 17 he has three multi-hit performances. Last Wednesday against Houston he belted his third homer of the season and produced three RBIs.

With a hot bat and a potentially favorable matchup, Swanson should be in good shape to do some more damage tonight.
