Boston Red Sox vs. Los Angeles Dodgers: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the opening game of the series against the Boston Red Sox on Friday night and they will be aiming to double up in Game Two as they looking to strengthen their position at the top of the National League West.

Boston nearly walked away with a win in the series opener on Friday night, but a well-timed grand slam from Freddie Freeman gave the Dodgers the win.

Even with the grand slam, the Dodgers managed just four hits against the Red Sox pitching staff. And to zero surprise, all four hits came from the top four guys in the order. That meant hitters 5-9 combined to go 0-for-13 with five strikeouts.

Not being able to get any production from the bottom half of the order will hold Los Angeles back from being an elite team. Unfortunately for them, they’re going to need to step it up at the plate on Saturday since Justin Wrobleski is making his third career start.

Wrobleski is Los Angeles’ #14 prospect and quickly moved up in the Minors because of the countless injuries to the Dodgers starting rotation.

After compiling a 4.35 ERA in 2 Triple-A starts, Wrobleski was promoted to the Majors. In two starts for the Dodgers, Wrobleski has allowed eight runs, 10 hits, four home runs, and four walks in 10 innings.

Brayan Bello was expected to be the new ace of the Red Sox rotation. With Chris Sale gone, the Sox were hopeful that their young stud, who was getting Pedro Martinez comparisons, would step up and become the face of their pitching staff.

But it’s been a tough season for Bello who enters this start with a 5.32 ERA and a 4.64 xERA in 17 starts. He’s still getting plenty of ground balls with his sinker, but he’s been allowing a lot of hard hit balls.

However, Bello has been much better on the road than at Fenway. His ERA drops to 4.59 and he’s allowing just a .258 batting average compared to a .301 BAA allowed at home. Plus, this is the most rested Bello has been since Opening Day. I’m willing to take a shot on the better pitcher at plus odds.

Over 9.0 (-110)

Although the Dodgers lineup was dormant last night, it won’t always stay like that. There might have been some rust that needed to be shaken off due to the All-Star break.

Bello is a step down compared to Nick Pivetta which means I’m expecting a little more production at the plate from the Dodgers. The Los Angeles lineup hasn’t seen much of Bello in their careers, but Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernandez are a combined 5-for-14 against him.

In addition to that, the over has been very profitable in Bello’s starts this season. The over is 8-2-1 in Bello’s last 11 starts with the average score in that span to be 11.82 runs. In his nine starts away from Fenway, the over is 8-1. The only time the over failed to hit was in a start against the White Sox. In short, there are plenty of runs when Bello is on the mound.

If it wasn’t for several injuries in the Dodgers starting rotation, Wrobleski would not be in the Majors. But since Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Bobby Miller, Walker Buehler, Emmet Sheehan, and Clayton Kershaw are all sidelined with injuries, the Dodgers have had to get creative in their staff.

That has given Wrobleski an early chance in the big leagues. However, the 24-year-old doesn’t appear ready for the bright lights just yet. The lefty has allowed a .271 xBA, 20% barrel rate, and 40% hard-hit rate through 10 innings.

His two outings came against the Milwaukee Brewers and Detroit Tigers, and tonight’s start against the Red Sox won’t be any easier. Neither starter has proved to be reliable this season, so it’s only right to side with the over in this matchup.
