Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The final season series between two AL East powerhouses begins in the Bronx as the Baltimore Orioles visit the New York Yankees.

The race for the division title was a close one for about five months with both teams holding the top spot for long periods of time, but a September collapse by the O’s has given the Yankees a clear path to first place.

New York can clinch the AL East with a series win, so there is a lot on the line between these teams this week.

The probable pitchers for the series opener includes Clarke Schmidt for the Yankees and Dean Kremer for the Orioles, so let’s preview this important matchup with our expert’s best bets.

Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees betting picks and predictions

Yankees ML (-160)

The Yankees and Orioles were separated by half a game in the AL East just two weeks ago. Everyone assumed that the division title would come down to the wire and that the winner of this series could be the winner of the division.

However, the Orioles have lost five of their last seven games and their lineup is in the midst of a bad slump. That puts them six games behindthe Yankees, all but guaranteeing New York the division.

Fortunately for the Orioles, they will still be in the postseason as they hold the top spot in the AL Wild Card race.

Baltimore will open this series with Dean Kremer making his 24th start of the season. The right-hander has been unpredictable, which has been a theme for the Orioles rotation in 2024.

Kremer has been decent since the All-Star break with a 3.98 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 11 starts, but he’s been hit hard by the Yankees in his career. New York’s lineup has a .273 batting average with a .488 xSLG in 135 plate appearances against Kremer.

New York has a problem, but it’s a good problem to have. The Yankees have a six-man rotation with the return of Clarke Schmidt to the starting role.

While most teams are scrambling to find a solid group of starters for the postseason, the Yankees will have to make the tough decisions to demote certain arms to the bullpen.

One name being thrown around to be moved to the arm barn is Clarke Schmidt, but he’s been making that decision even harder by stringing together several strong starts.

Schmidt has posted a 1.76 ERA in three starts after missing the previous four months with an injury. Schmidt has shut down the Red Sox, Cubs and Mariners in those starts, which suggests he can limit a slumping Orioles lineup.

Under 8.5 total runs (-120)

The Orioles' lineup is in a lot of trouble. In the first half of the season, we became accustomed to seeing Gunner Henderson, Adley Rutschman, and Anthony Santander lead off the game with extra-base hits and then Ryan Mountcastle, Colton Cowser, and Cedric Mullins get key situational hits to drive in the top of the order.

All of that offensive magic has disappeared in the last few weeks. In the last 30 days, the Orioles rank 26th in batting average, 18th in OPS, and 19th in slugging percentage against right-handed pitchers.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what went wrong for the Orioles, but they only have a week left to figure it out before the postseason.

They may have problems trying to break the slump on this occasion, though, because the Orioles have struggled to hit Schmidt.

The Baltimore lineup has a .195 batting average with a 21.5 percent strikeout rate in 93 plate appearances against him.

New York is coming off a beatdown of the Athletics in Oakland over the weekend. Besides helping their chances of winning the division, the series sweep also gave New York’s high-leverage relievers a break.

In fact, only one Yankees reliever has thrown more than 20 pitches in the last three days. That means the New York bullpen is very well rested and could cover up to four innings if Schmidt gets into trouble early.

And since the divisional title hangs in the balance, don’t expect Schmidt to have a long leash. With a slumping Orioles lineup and two rested bullpens, take the Under in New York.
