There are only a few weeks left in the regular season, and the Red Sox have their backs to the wall.
Boston hasn’t been eliminated from the postseason yet, but their chances have only been getting worse in the last few weeks.
Their blowout win in the series opener was a step in the right direction, and they will need to capitalize on this series to keep their hopes alive.
The probable starters for tonight include Kutter Crawford for the Sox and Albert Suarez for the Orioles, so let’s preview this AL East matchup and see our expert’s best bets.
Kutter Crawford has turned his season around. The right-hander burst onto the scene in April and was even among the way-too-early Cy Young discussions. However, it didn’t last forever.
Crawford struggled in May and June, and the All-Star break couldn't come soon enough for the young ace. Unfortunately for him, the extended break seemed to do more damage than good. He became a batting practice pitcher in his first few starts of the second half before understanding that he needed to change something.
After a slight tweak in his mechanics, Crawford has been back to his ace-like self recently. Crawford has allowed 3 hits or less in 4 of his last 5 starts and has limited hitters to a stunning .153 batting average and .166 xBA during that span.
His control has been much better, his off-speed pitches have been getting more swings and misses, and he’s not allowing as many balls to go over the wall. When Crawford took on the O’s in mid August, he surrendered just 2 hits in 5.1 innings.
Albert Suarez had a brutal stretch of opponents in August, like the Red Sox, Astros, and Guardians, but he still finished the month with a fantastic 1.97 ERA and 1.06 WHIP.
He was rewarded with a start against the White Sox last week, and Suarez had his worst outing of the season. The right-hander was shelled for 6 runs, 8 hits, and 3 home runs in just 4.1 innings.
It was a head-scratcher since he had a fabulous August, so it’s hard to guess which Suarez we’re going to see tonight. However, the reason I think we see a lesser version of Suarez is because his advanced metrics indicate he’s been getting lucky recently.
He owns a .299 batting average and a .278 xBA in his last 3 outings. If the Red Sox offense can perform half as good as they did yesterday, this should be a second straight win for Boston.
It’s a little scary to take the under when the Red Sox just scored 12 runs last night, but we should see a completely different level of pitching tonight.
Albert Suarez has only faced the Red Sox once this season but was spectacular in that outing as he threw 6 shutout innings and allowed only 7 hits while striking out 6.
There are very few Red Sox hitters that have good numbers against him in their careers, so there isn’t much advantage for the Boston offense even though they just faced him last month.
Plus, the O’s were able to rest their high-leverage relievers last night since the game got out of hand early. That means we should see Seranthony Dominguez, Yennier Cano, Keegan Akin, and Cionel Perez if the game is close.
The Red Sox bullpen has been a problem in the second half of the season. However, the good news is they used a struggling arm last night (Josh Winckowski) to eat most of the relief innings.
That saved several arms from being used, so that means Chris Martin, Justin Slaten, Zack Kelly, and Kenley Jansen are all on at least one day of rest and should be ready to go tonight.
If Crawford can get through 5 or 6 innings and allow 2 runs or less, he will put the Sox bullpen into a great position to close out the game. Back the pitching at Fenway tonight and take the under.
