The Baltimore Orioles will look to consolidate their place at the top of the American League East when they take on the Texas Rangers - third in the AL West - in the first of a three-game series at Globe Life Field, starting on Friday night.
It's the first game after the All-Star break for both teams, and they'll each want to start the second half of the season on a high note.
The second half of the season begins on Friday as all 30 teams return to action. For most players, it was a relaxing break before an important second-half surge.
For Corbin Burnes and plenty of his Orioles teammates, they were busy at the All-Star Game in Texas. Fortunately for them, they haven’t needed to travel since their first series after the break is against the Rangers.
Burnes was great as the opener for the American League on Tuesday and he will look to continue that success against an unpredictable Rangers team. The Baltimore ace closed out the first half well as he posted a stellar 2.12 ERA in June and then a 3.75 ERA in two starts in July.
One of his many starts in June came against the Rangers in Baltimore, and Burnes was dominant.
He allowed just one run and nine hits in seven innings without allowing a walk. He had the Texas lineup off balance with his cutter and curveball combination while also managing to be extremely efficient.
The Rangers' starter tonight, Nathan Eovaldi, is one name that is being thrown around in trade rumors. The trade deadline is less than two weeks away and teams need to decide if they’re going to be buyers and gear up for a postseason run or be sellers and trade away their star players for prospects.
The Rangers will need to decide which route they want to go down, but if they become sellers, Eovaldi could be the first to go. Eovaldi has been great once again this season with a 2.97 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 16 starts and has been the anchor in the Texas rotation.
The veteran was great before the break with a 1.29 ERA in three starts in July, but the difference will be at the plate and in the bullpen.
Baltimore has the stronger lineup and a more reliable arm barn which should give them the advantage on Friday night in Texas.
Between Burnes and Eovaldi, this game shouldn’t see too many runs. Burnes is well-rested and comes into this game with proven success against the Rangers lineup.
Only Corey Seager has seen the ball well against Burnes which means if the O’s avoid letting Seager impact the game, the Rangers will be limited on offense.
Plus, Burnes has been fantastic on the road this season. He owns a 2.94 ERA and has limited hitters to just a .190 batting average and .233 on-base percentage away from home in 2024.
When Burnes started against the Rangers earlier this season, he and two relief arms limited Texas to just two runs. This game has a great chance of staying under the total if Baltimore can do that again.
As a native of Texas, Eovaldi has pitched much better in his home state. Eovaldi has been lights out on his home mound as his ERA drops to 1.99 and he’s limited hitters to just a .166 batting average and .214 on-base percentage.
He’s allowed two earned runs or less in all 10 home starts in 2024 which gives me the confidence to back him to keep the O’s offense somewhat limited at the plate.
And since both bullpens are rested, every arm should be available and ready to go. I’m backing the Under in the first game of this series, which is the first game of the second half of the season for these two teams.
