Following a relatively dominant performance on Friday, the Baltimore Orioles are back in action against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday night. The AL East is as competitive as it’s ever been, so it’s certainly a pivotal matchup.
With that in mind, we’ve shared our best Orioles vs. Rays predictions and picks for today.
Given what we’ve seen from the O’s in the series opener, the season as a whole and frankly, the past couple of seasons with this young, talented roster, it’s difficult not to expect a similar result.
They’re truly putting things together ahead of the postseason, and with the New York Yankees not allowing them to take their foot off the gas, motivation is still as high as ever.
Of course, it certainly doesn’t hurt that Baltimore will have their ace on the mound - Corbin Burnes. He’s been every bit the part and then some since coming over from the Milwaukee Brewers. After piecing together young studs in the lineup, the starting rotation was the O’s biggest concern this past offseason, and they shored it up in a big way.
Burnes is 12-4 on the year with a 1.06 WHIP, leading the O’s to win in each of his last four starts. The most recent of which came against the Cleveland Guardians, who have been rivaling Baltimore in terms of having the best record in baseball.
As for the Rays, they didn’t even have a starter named until the 11th hour, which will be Drew Rasmussen.
He’s also a former Brewer, but nothing close to the caliber of Burnes. Rasmussen isn’t even in midseason form, as injury has caused him to have just one appearance this season, and it wasn’t even a start. That makes facing this O’s lineup a daunting task, especially with Jackson Holliday now proving himself worth the hype.
There’s no denying that he performed very poorly when he was first called up, but after some time away, he came back to Baltimore in a big way, immediately hitting a grand slam. He has since gone yard a few times, making the young trio of Holliday, Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman as solid as it gets.
With all the pieces in play, the best bet from our Orioles vs. Rays predictions is Baltimore -1.5
We’ve already mentioned several O’s hitters, and they were able to get off to a hot start in Friday's game courtesy of a Colton Cowser leadoff home run. With so many great names to choose from, you almost can’t go wrong.
However, to add to our Orioles vs. Rays predictions, we’re going to target the aforementioned Gunnar Henderson. The shortstop has been more than just a great young stud - he has been an AL MVP candidate since early in the season.
It’s not often that we see a shortstop with so much power; in fact, he’s already setting franchise records for the position. Keep in mind that the great Cal Ripken, Jr. started there before swapping to third base, making it even more impressive!
Regardless, he’s set to bat cleanup in today’s game, and he’s been among Baltimore’s best against Tampa this season.
In their season's series, Henderson is hitting a whopping .364, and it’s no small sample size. He’s had 33 plate appearances against the Rays this year, and within his great performance, he’s had two doubles and three home runs. So, he could go more than 1.5 total bases in just a single at-bat a few minutes into the game!
With that type of value, the best player prop pick from our Orioles vs. Rays predictions is on Gunnar Henderson over 1.5 total bases.
