Michigan is fresh off its dream season. The Wolverines went undefeated, won their first national championship since 1997, and beat vaunted rivals Ohio State along the way.
Less than eight months removed from that title-game triumph over Washington, the program has moved on from head coach Jim Harbaugh, who left to coach the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers, and two-year starting QB J.J. McCarthy.
As a result, the reigning CFP champions are ranked No. 9 in the nation to open 2024, now with Sherrone Moore at the helm and junior QB Alex Orji under center.
Let’s take a look at Michigan’s odds for the 2024 season.
Michigan won nine games or more seven times in Jim Harbaugh's eight full seasons (not counting 2020, in which Michigan played six games), including an undefeated 15-0 record in 2023/24.
Michigan is fourth-favorite to win the Big Ten, trailing Ohio State (+150), Oregon (+200) and Penn State (+450). The Wolverines have won three-straight Big Ten titles, but have some added competition in 2024 with Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA joining the conference.
Michigan has gone to three-straight CFPs, including last year's national title. In their two previous trips they lost in the CFP semifinal to Georgia and TCU, respectively. The Wolverines finished the season ranked No. 14 or better seven times under Jim Harbaugh.
Michigan is tenth in the betting to win the national title, and can become just the second team to go back-to-back since 2011-2012, and the first ever to do it with two different coaches.
