Teofimo Lopez vs. Steve Claggett title at stake

Lopez will be making the second defence of his WBO super lightweight/light welterweight world title.

Teofimo Lopez record

Lopez has a 20-1 record with 13 of his victories coming inside the distance.

The Brooklyn native made his professional debut in 2016 after winning the amateur Golden Gloves lightweight title in 2015.

Lopez's first six wins all came via stoppages, before he was taken the full six rounds by Christian Santibanez in 2017.

'The Takeover' recorded a pair of impressive wins over the experienced Juan Pablo Sanchez and the 14-1 Vitor Jones in 2018, before claiming a first title as he overcame William Silva to land the vacant WBC Continental Americas lightweight belt later that year.

Lopez picked up three more regional level titles and recorded three further stoppage wins as he moved up to #4 in the IBF's rankings. In 2019, he faced off against the undefeated Masayoshi Nakatani, ranked #3 by the IBF, in a final eliminator for the IBF world lightweight title.

Lopez went 12 rounds for the first time in his career as he claimed a unanimous decision win over Nakatani - setting up his first shot at a world title against Richard Commey. Lopez overcame Commey in devastating fashion, ending the fight in the second round after landing with a huge right hand.

The 26-year-old then produced a monumental upset as he defied the odds to beat Ukrainian star Vasyl Lomachenko on points, unifying the lightweight division, but he followed that up with a shock defeat to Australia's George Kambosos Jr.

Lopez responded to his first defeat with victories over Pedro Campa and Sandor Martin before becoming a two-weight world champion by taking the WBO light welterweight title from Josh Taylor, claiming a unanimous decision win over the Scot in New York.

Lopez nearly lost his world title at the first attempt again as he came up against Jamaine Ortiz in his last bout. Ortiz's defensive tactics frustrated Lopez over the course of the 12 rounds and many observers felt the challenger had done enough to win, but Lopez was awarded a unanimous decision victory. His bout with Claggett will be his first since that controversial win over Ortiz.

Steve Claggett record

Claggett has a 38-7-2 record and 26 of his wins have come inside the distance, while he has been stopped himself once.

The 34-year-old Canadian has never really fought anywhere near world level in his 16 years as a professional but he will come into this bout on the back of a nine-fight winning streak, a run that includes a pair of points wins over experienced Mexican duo Carlos Sanchez and Miguel Madueno, who were 23-1 and 30-1 respectively before facing Claggett.

The Calgary native has struggled outside of Canada, however, and he is 3-5 in fights away from his homeland - and 2-4 in the US.

Claggett's last bout came in January as he stopped Mexico's Marcos Gonzalez Barraza in the second round in Montreal.

Teofimo Lopez vs. Steve Claggett odds

Lopez is an overwhelming -900 favorite to win, with Claggett a +550 underdog.
