Murphy truly announced himself as a major title contender in his last fight when he delivered one of the knockouts of the year against Aaron Pico at UFC 319 back in August.
The 34-year-old's spinning back elbow against the highly touted former Bellator star came ironically after stepping in for the injured Mosvar Evloev.
Murphy's title call out was denied and instead has to go through the Russian in order to claim a shot at Alexander Volkanovski.
Back on track
Prior to the Pico win, Murphy made some impressive progress up the UFC rankings following a life-threatening injury in 2022, when he was knocked off his bike while training for a fight.
Returning to the Octagon with back-to-back wins in 2023, the Manchester fighter was awarded a first main event slot where he defeated Edson Barboza over five rounds at the Apex in May 2024.
A victory over Dan Ige followed at UFC 308 later that year, before Murphy once again headlined an Apex card last April, with a dominant decision win over Josh Emmett.

Murphy's bike accident in 2022 is not the only time he has come back from life-threatening injuries.
