Kyle Larson can become just the second driver in history to finish ‘The Double’ on Saturday.
Considered one of the most difficult achievements in motorsports, ‘The Double’, or ‘double duty,’ requires a driver complete both the Indianapolis 500, an IndyCar race, and the Coca-Cola 600, a NASCAR race, in the same day.
The challenge is also referred to as the ‘Indy-Charlotte Double’ or ‘Memorial Day Double’ as the two races always coincide on Memorial Day weekend.
Completing both races is considered an amazing feat, winning both would be a once-in-a-lifetime achievement.
This weekend, 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson will be the latest driver to attempt ‘The Double.’
First, Larson will race in the Indy 500, beginning at 12:45 PM ET on Saturday, May 25.
If he successfully completes the race, he will immediately board a helicopter to a nearby airport, where he will then take a jet to Concord Regional Airport in Concord, North Carolina.
He will then travel to Charlotte Motor Speedway, the site of the Coca-Cola 600, for a 6 PM ET race start.
All in all, completing both races would require Larson to race for more than seven hours in two separate racing disciplines, in addition to physical and mental exhaustion, several hours of plane travel, and logistical planning.
Tony Stewart is the only driver in history to complete ‘double duty’ and finish all 1,100 miles of racing in the same day.
On May 27, 2001, Stewart finished sixth in the Indy 500 before coming third in the Coca-Cola 600 later that night.
The two races have been held on the same day since 1974. Several drivers completed the feat when the two races were held on separate days.
John Andretti was the first driver to compete in both races on the same day on May 29, 1994, although he did not complete either.
Kurt Busch is the last driver to attempt ‘double duty’ on May 25, 2014. Busch came in sixth in the Indy 500, but did not complete the Coca-Cola 600 later that night.
