Philadelphia 76ers center and 2022/23 NBA MVP Joel Embiid makes his 2024/25 debut in the NBA Cup game vs. the New York Knicks on Tuesday, November 12.
Embiid missed Philly's first nine games due to injury and suspension. Both he and the Sixers have said ensuring he is healthy for the playoffs is the top priority, which caught the attention of the league thanks to its player participation policy.
The 7-foot center was held to just 39 regular season games in 2023/24 due to injury, and the Sixers went 31-8 in those games. Without Embiid, Philly went 16-27.
One of the reasons the team signed Paul George in the offseason was to make sure the team doesn't fall off a cliff when its franchise player sits, but the Sixers are 2-7 overall and 1-3 with PG on the floor this season. Philly was +1600 to win the NBA Championship after starting 1-6, and they're now out to +2000.
Embiid posted career highs of 34.7 points and 5.6 assists per game in 2023/24, and he shot a career-best 38.8 percent from beyond the arc. He also had a 39.6 percent usage rate, meaning almost 40 percent of Philly's possessions ended with Embiid either taking a shot, taking a free throw or turning the ball over when he was on the floor.
For Sixers head coach Nick Nurse, having Embiid opens things up for everyone else. Not only does he create for himself, but he draws double teams and averaged a career-high in assists in Nurse's first season after posting a nearly even assist-to-turnover ratio in each of his first seven NBA seasons.
Before taking our first look at the Sixers with Embiid and George on the floor together, let's take a look at Embiid's player props, lines and odds for his season debut.
