Washington Commanders rookie QB Jayden Daniels posted by far the best game of any rookie QB so far in 2024, leading his team to a 38-33 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night.
Not only was it the best rookie QB performance of the new season, but it was one of the best QB performances, period.
Daniels completed 21 of 23 passes for 254 yards and 2 pass TDs to go along with 12 rushes for 39 yards and a rush TD. The No. 2 overall pick is now the +160 favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Thanks to his Monday night display, the Commanders signal-caller jumped New York Giants rookie WR Malik Nabers in the betting. Nabers was favored following his 2 TD outing vs. the Cleveland Browns in the Giants’ first win of the season on Sunday.
It wasn’t just Daniels’ final statline that stood out vs. Cincinnati, it was the plays he made to get there.
After the Bengals took the lead on the opening drive of the game, Daniels led a 10-play, 70-yard drive to even the score at seven. Up 14-10 in the second quarter, he connected with Terry McLaurin on a 55-yard bomb that set up a walk-in TD for Daniels.
But the rookie’s best throw of his near-perfect night came in clutch time. Leading by five with 2:15 remaining in the game on 3rd & 7, Daniels delivered another strike to McLaurin, this time in the corner of the end zone to seal the victory.
It was the type of under-pressure, accurate throw you typically only see out of the NFL’s elite QBs, which makes it even more notable that it came off the hand of someone playing in just his third career game.
