Jaime Munguía faces Erik Bazinyan on Friday night, with the Mexican star looking to get back to winning ways following his loss to compatriot Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez last time out.
Continue reading for Rob Tebbutt's pick for this super middleweight bout from Glendale, Arizona on Friday, September 20.
Despite suffering the first loss of his career to Alvarez back in May, Munguia’s stock arguably rose after a gutsy, competitive showing as the underdog. He returns here, back in the home corner, as a sizeable favorite (-1400) to record the 44th win of his career against the largely untested Bazinyan (+750).
The bout will be the first time Bazinyan has competed at legitimate world level, although he does hold a relatively impressive sixth round stoppage win over former-David Benavidez opponent Ronald Ellis back in October 2023.
I expect Munguia to be too fresh and too aggressive for Bazinyan, with his relentless pressure and combination punching being enough to see him to a win somewhere in the mid-to-late rounds. We’ve seen Bazinyan struggle against another aggressive Mexican in Jose de Jesus Macias back in June 2023 in a bout he was badly hurt in, and I feel he will struggle to contain the marauding Munguia on Friday night.
