The Jacksonville Jaguars decided to fire Doug Pederson as head coach after three seasons and one playoff berth.
Pederson was hired before the 2022 season and led the Jags to 9-8 records in each of his first two campaigns. Jacksonville made the playoffs in Pederson's first year, but in 2024, the team regressed to a 4-13 record with a bottom-five defense and bottom-10 offense.
Even more fatal to Pederson's hopes of retaining his job was the lack of development seen from 2021 first-overall draft pick Trevor Lawrence. In 2024, his fourth NFL season, Lawrence posted the fewest yards per game for his career (204.5) and the lowest completion percentage since his rookie season before missing the last seven games of the season due to injury.
In the 2024 season, the Jags ranked 26th in points scored per game (18.8) and 27th in points allowed per game (25.6). With a healthy Lawrence throwing to WR Brian Thomas Jr., who will be in his second season in 2025, Jacksonville will want to hire a coaching staff that can get the best out of those two and a defense led by talented edge rushers Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker.
Here, we'll take a look at the latest odds to become the next head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Robert Saleh | +110 |
Liam Coen | +140 |
Ben Johnson | +350 |
Joe Brady | +1000 |
Aaron Glenn | +1200 |
Todd Monken | +1600 |
Kellen Moore | +2500 |
Brian Flores | +3300 |
Mike McCarthy | +3500 |
Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is the new +110 favorite to be named the next Jacksonville Jaguars head coach. After completing an interview with the team, his odds shortened from +1600.
Saleh went 20-36 in three and a half seasons as Jets head coach, and in his second-to-last season as San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator, he led the unit to allow the third-fewest points in the NFL.
Liam Coen, the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is the +140 second-favorite to be hired as the new Jaguars head coach. He had been the favorite until Saleh overtook him.
Under Coen's command, the Bucs offense finished fourth in points per game (29.5) and third in total yards (6,793). Plus, he helped guide QB Baker Mayfield to the best season of his career.
Third in the market at +350 is Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson, who has seen his name amid the head coaching rumors in the past couple of offseasons but still has yet to take a head coaching job.
The Lions offense finished first in points per game (33.2) and second in yards (6,962), and Johnson has played a major role in the resurgence of QB Jared Goff. Now that the Lions are eliminated from the playoffs, teams could start moving quickly to hire Johnson.
Buffalo Bills OC Joe Brady, who has been in the job since 2023, is fourth in the odds at +1000 to be the next Jacksonville head coach. The Bills ranked sixth in points in 2023 and second in that category in '24, and Brady played a role in Bills QB Josh Allen's MVP-caliber season in 2024.
Aaron Glenn, the Lions' defensive coordinator, is fifth in the market - and the last candidate shorter than 15/1 - at +1200 to get the Jags' head coaching position. He took Detroit from being a bottom-10 unit in points allowed last season to finishing seventh in points allowed in 2024 despite a rash of injuries.
Further back in the odds, from 16/1 to 35/1, are Baltimore Ravens OC Todd Monken, Philadelphia Eagles OC Kellen Moore, Minnesota Vikings DC Brian Flores, and former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.
