Teams have been sorted into groups of five based on their win-loss record from the 2022-23 season, totaling six groups in all.
At the start of the tournament, each team will begin Group Play by playing two road games and two home games - one against each opponent in their respective group - on what are being labeled 'Tournament Nights'.
The teams with the best record within their group will advance to the Knockout Rounds, as well as the best second-placed team earing a wild card spot in each conference.
Eight total teams will then compete in single-elimination games in the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Championship, with a prize pool at stake, along with the new NBA Cup Trophy for the winner.
The following will list each group and the teams that represent that group underneath it:
There are currently odds available for the In-Season Tournament in terms of each group’s winner.
The favorites to win the tournament are the Celtics (+700), the Nuggets (+850), the Suns (+1000), the Bucks (+1000), and the Lakers (+1200).
One topic on many fans’, and players’, minds is the incentives for the winning team as well as the top performers from an individual standpoint.
Well, the winner of the In-Season Tournament will take home the brand-new NBA Cup, a trophy specifically designed for this event.
Additionally, a prize pool will be up for grabs for players on teams which advance into the Knockout Rounds. The specific amounts per player per team depend on how far that team makes it.
There will also be an In-Season Tournament Most Valuable Player named by the NBA at the conclusion of the event, along with a list of players that will represent the All-Tournament team.
With a new event on the rise, it’s also important to note that the NBA In-Season Tournament will indeed count towards the regular-season standings aside from the final Championship game.
An 82-game regular season schedule is still what will take place for the 2023-24 NBA season.
